Ontario Research Foundation Symposium on Electrical Prooorti es cf Asbestes rib or The Fiber Testing Committee sponsored a symposium on el-sotrica; properties of asbestos fiber. Mr. Ii, ri, Eigerter. of thr JccnManville products Corp. was principal speaker and cinductvd th aession. Members from the Technical and the Air Hygiene -1. :Lins Committees participated. In summary, the symposium accomplished the objective of remit-... ing the various electrical properties required in nr. asbestos textile, method of testing for*each property, relative electric values of different Jrypes of asbestos, and most important, a discussion on the physical and chemical chariot aria tics cf csb. that influenoo the electrical properties, With a better understanding of the causes of poor electrical properties it is felt that the textile manufacturer could sera intelligently pursue the development of improved asbestos prccu for the electrical industry. Teat Procedures 1, Magnetic Rating Test A preliminary study by several members indicated sufficient potential of the Magnetic Force Method as proposed by ?.syces tec Manhattan to justify a formal study by this committee. As expected in teats of this nature there ors many critical areas that must be thoroughly investigated relative to reliabil A sub-committee was formed consisting of J.L . Hawkins,Chairman, E.A. Farrell, and J.D. McCluer to first submIt recommendations on procedure for preparing standard samples to be used in the teat studies,nd then attempt to define the critical areas in the proposed teat method. MT-< Minutes; Fiber T e st in g Committee ( 2. Suber-Webb Comb Teat A revised procedure developed by Csssiar Corp. and Turner Bros, Aabeat03 Co.,was reviewed by Mr, Tigert of Cas3iar, Copies cf the procedure were distributed and will be further reviened'by all members for action relative to adoption by the next meeting. 3. frictional Properties Johns-Manvllle reported considerable difficulty in arriving at a satisfactory technique of anchoring the.test pad of fiber to the rotational discs in the experimental friction teeter. V/hen ohe bond between the pad of fibers and the discs is less than the inter-frictional fiber resistance the values obtained are r.;t significant. Work will continue on this project. 4. Bauer-McNett Wet Classifier QAMA reported in their November 19, 1953 meeting that work is continuing on the new classifier. Splashing was found to be due to mechanical imperfections in the machine and work is underway to eliminate these. All of the other recommendations made by the QAMA sub-committeo to Bauer Brothers have been concurred -.izh, The sub-committee will review the distributed results on the use of the automatic wiper to avoid manual cleaning. l Report on New ASTM High Modulus and Inorganic Fiber Committee The subject committee was formally organized in January 1354 with P.D, Gorsuch of the General Electric Space Technology Center as Chairman. A3beat03 fib'er is covered in one of the cut-- c o m itto i As in previous meetings, the scope was limited by a majority vets to test procedures and riefinitions, ard does not include specific ations for the present. Our A.T.I. Fiber Tasting Committee pinna te keep abreast with the progress of this ASTM committee. Plans for Revising the Manual of Test Procedures Publishing of either a revised manual or an appendix is tent atively scheduled for the first of 1965, The cut-off date for approving the contents has been set for the October 1564 meet ing of this committee. In the meantime, all approved but unpublished tests and all reviaons will be reviewed by A.T.I.,ACPA, and QAMA. Our British ard French Associates will be notified of these plans ard. will be requested to actively participate in the review. Respectfully Submitted, Irvin Barnett, Chairman MT-005944
