This light is a safety device for the Laboratory Mill Operator. There are times when the technician running the mill is the only one in the laboratory. If a hand should get caught in the mill, help would be needed to free the hand. Normally, the mill is constantly running. Now, when the mill is turned off, a switch installed in the mill will activate the Trip-Lite in Resin Finishing. It starts flashing red. At this time, the resin finishing operator and helper, if both are available, should go to the laboratory to make sure no one has been caught in the mill rolls. If someone is caught in the mill rolls, follow this Emergency Mill Procedure. First and foremost is to get the man released from the mill rolls. A. Stop the mill and turn off main power to mill. Alert lab members to the injury. Call guard to call emergency rescue from Ashtabula Township and the Ashtabula Emergency Room. B. Open rolls with steel bars to release man. C. There are two (2) other methods to rescue an individual in a mill: 1. Roll Reversing Method (for Farrell Mill Only). RECOMMENDED METHOD. a. Reset the safety switch to energi2e the system. b. Turn on main power to mills, c. Slowly jog the rolls back to release the man. d. If time permits, open the foils before reversing them. 2. Manual Roll Opening Method (for Both Mills). USE THIS PROCEDURE AS A LAST RESORT a. Cut vinyl from entrapped body member. h b. Drive steel wedges between rolls to open them. c. Pour water on mill to cool rolls and lubricate them for easier extraction. Care must be taken to avoid excessive steam being given off. GENC 23719 Procedure: LS-1 Page: 2 of 2 The Mill Rescue Kit shall contain: a. 2 - 20-lb. sledge hammers b. 1 - lead mallet c. 2 - 3-ft. lengths of pipe to open mill d. Steel wedges to open mill e. Pry bars f. 1 - 12-inch crescent wrench g. Water pail SAFETY RULES FOR MILL 1. Only thoroughly trained personnel are to operate the mills. 2. Loose tools and equipment shall be removed from mill before operating. 3. Ties, loose clothing, very long hair, etc., shall not be worn by the mill operator. 4. Always cut the vinyl at or below the horizontal centerline of the rolls. 5. Do not cut material at the top of the rolls. 6. If a tool accidentally falls into the roll nip, do not try to catch it; let it go, and stop the mill. 7. When loading mill, always let mill pull material into the nip area. Never try to force material in the nip area with hands. 8. If the mill worker wears gloves, they should be slit from wrist to knuckle so they will slide off if entangled. 9.
