Dear Doctor Baylor: In accordance with your letter of January 2, 1963, I have authorized the sending of containers for the collection of samples of the urine and blood of your Company's employee with instructions for their collection. You the attached copy of ray letter, that I have asked Mr. Hartzel to have these samples collected by a physician. You are entirely correct in your belief that the general nature of this man's work is such that he should not have absorbed lead because of it. There may have been some other source, however, which is not apparent. We should be able to determine whether or not he has absorbed any appreciable quantity of lead, provided the patient is not being subjected to chelation therapy at the time the samples are obtained. The analytical results which you have reported, on their face value, to me are too high to be regarded as probable. It is more than likely that they are the result of poor sampling or analytical techniques or some combination of both of these faults. We encounter these problems with such frequency that I recognize them at a distance. We shall investigate, however, without prejudice, and report the results to you in due course. One of the things I shall need, for the purposes of interpretation, as well as for the record, is the history of this man's illness (onset and course), the data concerning his employment, with particular reference to the last day of work, and the complete account of the therapy administered, with the dates. Baylor, your Company's Medical Director, has asked me to send containers to you for the collection of samples of urine and blood from an employee, Mr. W. A. Henderson. These will come to you in due course, with instructions for the collection of the samples. These samples should be obtained by a physician who will follow the instructions in minute detail. I trust, there-" fore, that you will make suitable arrangements for this purpose, transmitting both the containers and the instructions to the physician, and then having them forwarded to mo. If this is done by the physician who is attending Mr. Henderson, he (the physician) should be asked to fill out the record which accompanies the samples, as fully as possible, so that we shall be able to interpret the results on a proper background, of in formation. If some other physician collects the samples he should fill out as much of the form as he can, without asking the patient about the medical details. I have asked Dr. Baylor to obtain for rae and to forward to me all of the pertinent details of the patient's medical history and record.
