3. FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD DATA: (CONTINUED)
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Water fog, carbon dioxide, dry chemical. Water fog, applied gently, may be used as a blanket for fire extinguishment. If possible, contain fire run off water. For large scale fires, direct water stream may cause violent frothing, but fine water spray may help control situation.
FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARDS: Keep unnecessary people away; isolate hazard area and deny unnecessary entry. Dense smoke emitted when burned without sufficient oxygen. When using water spray, boil over may occur when the product temperature reaches the boiling point of water (tank type scenarios, not spills).
FIRE-FIGHTING EQUIPMENT: Wear positive-pressure, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective equipment.
4. REACTIVITY DATA:
STABILITY: (CONDITIONS TO AVOID) Excellent thermal stability characteristics at typical use temperatures.
INCOMPATIBILITY: material.
(SPECIFIC MATERIALS TO AVOID)
Oxidizing
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: As with all commercially available aromatic heat transfer fluids, the potential exists for trace amounts of benzene to form when used at elevated temperatures. Similarly, with this product, small amounts of phenol may form. Both components are likely to concentrate in vent pipe header. Combustion may produce carbon, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and water.
HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: Will not occur.

5. ENVIRONMENTAL AND DISPOSAL INFORMATION:
ACTION TO TAKE FOR SPILLS/LEAKS: Keep out of sewers, storm drains, surface waters and soil. Material is more dense than water and has limited water solubility. It will collect on the lowest surface. Large spills: dike to contain spill, recover if possible. Small spills can be covered with absorbent material.
DISPOSAL METHOD: As a CHEMAWARE (SM) service, Dow maintains a Fluid Credit Program. Unused, uncontaminated material may, under certain circumstances, be returned for fluid credit. For used or contaminated material additional evaluation is required. Call Dow Thermal Fluids Technical Service & Development, collect, at 517/^36--0172 for further information.
Another option is to send to permitted incinerators. Do not dump into any sewers, on the ground, or into any body of water. Any disposal practice must be in compliance with federal, state, provincial, and local laws and regulations. For additional information, see: Section 4 (REACTIVITY DATA) and "REGULATORY INFORMATION."
6. HEALTH HAZARD DATA:
EYE: May cause slight eye irritation. Corneal injury is unlikely. Vapors may irritate eyes.
SKIN CONTACT: Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause skin irritation.
SKIN ABSORPTION: A single prolonged exposure is not likely to result in the material being absorbed through skin in harmful amounts. The LD50 for skin absorption in rabbits is >2000 mg/kg.
INGESTION: Single dose oral toxicity is low. The oral LD50

for male rats is 2322 mg/kg. Small amounts swallowed incidental to normal handling operations are not likely to cause injury; swallowing amounts larger than that may cause inj ury .
INHALATION: Excessive exposure may cause irritation to upper respiratory tract. May cause headache and nausea due to odor.
SYSTEMIC & OTHER EFFECTS: Repeated excessive exposures to high amounts may cause liver effects. Repeated excessive exposures to smaller amounts may cause irritation to the eyes and nose.
MUTAGENICITY: Results of in vitro ('test tube') mutagenicity tests on diphenyl oxide have been negative.
7. FIRST AID:
EYES: Flush eyes with plenty of water.
SKIN: Wash off in flowing water or shower.
INGESTION: Induce vomiting if large amounts are ingested. Consult medical personnel.
INHALATION: Remove to fresh air if effects occur. Consult medical personneI.
NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: No specific antidote. Supportive care. Treatment based on judgment of the physician in response to reactions of the patient.

8. HANDLING PRECAUTIONS:
EXPOSURE GUIDELINE: Diphenyl oxide (phenyl ether): ACGIH TLV is 1 ppm TWA, 2 ppm STEL. OSHA PEL is 1 ppm. Biphenylyl phenyl ether: Dow IHG is 10 mg/m3.
VENTILATION: Provide general and/or local exhaust ventilation to control airborne levels below the exposure guidelines.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Atmospheric levels should be maintained below the exposure guideline. When respiratory protection is required for certain operations, use an approved air-purifying respirator. For emergency and other conditions where the exposure guideline may be greatly exceeded, use an approved positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus or positive-pressure airline with auxiliary self-contained air suppIy.
SKIN PROTECTION: Use gloves impervious to this material when prolonged or frequently repeated contact could occur.
EYE PROTECTION: Use safety glasses. If vapor exposure causes eye discomfort, use a full-face respirator.
9. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING AND STORAGE: Practice reasonable care and caution to avoid eye contact prolonged, repeated skin contact. Avoid breathing vapors generated.

Above flash point vapor-air mixtures will burn within flammable limits noted above. Spills of these organic liquids on hot fibrous insulations may result in fluid/ vapor combustion in the insulation.
Caution is required when maintaining vent piping because small amounts of benzene and/or phenol may form when this
