Proposed Guidelines on Asbestos
Background
As asbestos is prohibited by government regulations in certain
)
uses and regulated in many others, Monsanto should determine their position regarding this substance. A letter regarding asbestos identification and elimination is attached for your information.
S&PP and CED have the following preliminary proposal for your consideration.
1. Change the specifications in the CED standards to elimi nate asbestos in pipeline gaskets wherever practical.
2. Change/update the workplace guidelines in accordance with proposed OSHA regulations.
3. Require asbestos in-line gaskets to be replaced with non-asbestos gaskets with repair/replacement projects.
4. Valve and other speciality application specifications will be asbestos free unless impractical or unless a plant location requests asbestos.
We would appreciate your comments and position regarding asbestos, as well as any additional assistance which may be

required in identifying problem areas or developing procedures to remove asbestos.
