Dear Doctor Karr: I wish to apologise for my delay in answering your letter of May 8th occasioned by a rather extended absence from the laboratory. I have on hand only a very small quantity of puri fied 2-phenylthianapthene and tetraphenylthiophene. I do have a larger'quantity of the crude materials but' they would require careful purification. At the present time we are unfortunately not in a position to take the time to do this purification... I had suggested to Dr. H. M. -Smith that if desirable we should be willing to set up a small scale project to synthesise larger quantities of various heterocyclic sulfur compounds with two or more rings. However, I do not believe that the API Advisory Committee has had sufficient interest iif; this type of compound as yet. My best regards to Dr. Qrusa. Mr. H. K. Smith, Director of API Research Project 4SA, has recently informed me that you may be able to supply us with some of these uncommon compounds. The compounds which Mr. Smith believes you might possibly have on hand, and which we would be interested in, are phenyl thiophenes such as 2,4- or 2,5-diphenyl thiophene and tetraphenyl thiophene. However, we are not at all limited to phenyl thiophenes in our search, and would welcome information on the availability of other rare heterocyclic sulfur compounds.
