National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health 4676 Columbia Parkway Cincinnati, OH 45226 PERIOD FOR THIS NRP Sun Date: October 1981 End Dfte: September 1982 Annual Funding: PROJECT SUMMARY For the past year, the Division has been investigating a series of brain tumor deaths at a large petrochemical facility in Texas. An elevated risk of death due to brain tumor (odds-ratio of 2.54) has been suggested by a case-control study based on county death certificates. The objectives of the activities pro posed here as a new project plan are the refinement of the initial brain tumor risk estimates. This plan attempts 1) identification of risk factors that may be associated with any increased risk of brain tumor, and 2) surveillance of the other 44,000 current and former employees for other types of cancer or disease that may be associated with occupation. Petroleum installations have been linked by numerous experimental toxicology and epidemiology studies with numerous types of cancer. This project has the potential of identifying risk factors which may be associated with cancer excesses in this facility and other similar facilities. If risk factors are identified, this information could be incorporated in prevention strategies. Methodological benefits are also expected from this study.
