KNOWLEDGE OF THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ASBESTOS AND DISEASE:
This note covers two matters:
(a) the chronology of medical knowledge associating asbestos exposure and asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma
(b) a review of specific literature in the CSR Limited technical library up to the mid 1950's.
f t fD
(a) Chronology
I can do no better than refer to the brief chronology provided by Dr. McCullagh, and the more extensive and authoritative chronology give by Selikoff and Lee in "Asbestos and Disease" (Academic Press N.Y. 1978) . A copy
) / of pages 20 to 32 of the latter is attached.
(b) Literature in CSR Technical Library
Mr. I.P. Willington of my department has surveyed all periodicals which may possibly have been of relevance, and to which CSR subscribed.in the years 1946-54. There wer some references to asbestos mining, but very few on heal effects.
The main articles found were as follows.
1. The Australasian Engineer, April 8, 1947. Article on asbestos mining in Eastern Canada (Thetford Mines, Quebec). Description of mine and mill, no reference to dust control or health effects. Photographs of mining and processing show no respirators, and e.g. piles of fibre on floor at bagging station.
) 2. Chemical Engineering and Mining Review, April
10, 1951. Short paragraph on Asbestosis, as below.
"Asbestosis Studied Experimentally1'
Inhalation experiments with asbestos dust and animals suggest that the action of asbestos dust on the lung is very different from the action of silica dust. Some conclusions from the experiments are:-
* Long asbestos fibres (20 to 50 Microns) are essential in the production of the peribronchiolar
f ibrosi ? e'-'rr*- ihr arA inranshlo
2
* The mode of action of the long asbestos fibre in the production of asbestosis is primarily mechanical rather than chemical in nature.
* Duration of exposure required to develop asbestosis varies inversely as the concentration of long fibres in the atmosphere.
* Established experimental fibrosis ceases to progress on discontinuance of dust exposure.
* Aluminium hydroxide failed to neutralise the fibrosing action of the long fibre asbestos.
* Inhalation of asbestos dust did not alter significantly the final outcome of tuberculosis.
A.J. Vorwald, T.M. Durkan and P.C. Pratt in A.M.A. Archives of Industrial Hvgiene and Occupational Medicine (Vol. 3, p. 1.)
3. Rock Products, July 1954.
Article "More Efficient Mining and Modern Plant Double Asbestos Production" by Marion L. Briggs. Describes new Ruberoid Co., Newmont Asbestos Division plant in Lowell, Vermont USA.
Bag filters used to remove "all harmful dust and offensive odor".

"In asbestos milling, which is a dry process, considerable dust is created in the various operations, together with a large amount contained in the air from the fan exhausts, as the fibre collector is really only a partially efficient separator. Some shorter fibres escape into the fan, and these, if recovered, have commercial value.
In the past, this air has usually been sent through ducts to a large setting chamber, where the heavier material is dropped because of reduced velocity and returned to a sp ^cial
circuit or department in the mill flow. At the end of the dust building there is a chimney for the exhaust dust. In one instance where this dust has been objectionable one company has Installed a Cotrell system.
However, a recent successful development has been the application of bag type collectors with automatic shaking devices, which usually can be made to fit very nicely into the top of the conventional mill building. These units not only recover the valuable fibre, but also the dust, so there is a very small amount of exhaust dust in the atmosphere. Some companies are experimenting with the possibilities of recirculating this air. About 98% efficiency by weight is claimed for these units, and at present, there are many installations under way. The cost is approximately 20 cents per cubic foot of air, aad about 1 sq ft of filter cloth is
necessary for filtering 2 cu ft of air."
