ETHYL CORPORATION OP CANADA LIMITED Mmorandum of Meeting with Department of Public Health Edmonton, Alberta Subject: HIGHER TETRAETHYL LEAD CONTENT IN MOTOR FUEL The meeting was held on Wednesday, January 13, i960 at 10:00 A . M . in the new administration building. Present were Dr. Asbury Somerville, Deputy Minister of Health; Mr. J.S. Charlesworth of the Alberta Research Council; two representatives of the Workmen's Compensation Board - Mr. R.C. Henderson, Safety Director and Mr. R. 'Rollie1' Leng, Accident Prevention Department; Mr. A.C. Tally and Dr. D.R. Warren. Dr. Somerville Introduced the discussions with his interpretation of our mission, I.e. to obtain approval of the proposed plan. Mr. fully corrected this misinterpretation and followed with the Justification for the increase to 4 ml. per U.S. gallon. Mr. Charlesworth, a small young man, quickly volunteered his opinion that anything supplanting the use of petroleum or its products in any way was inappropriate in Alberta. He informed the meeting that Alberta had its own standards and regulations for automotive fuel sold in the province and that he was charged with- maintaining these standards including sampling gasoline for TEL. After a few minutes of slight discomposure the discussion turned more constructively to the main topic and followed the pattern of previous meetings. 0003379 1* Alberta Department of Health Meeting - January 13, I960 Safety was introduced by the Compensation Board repre sentatives who seem to be developing in the province some interest in chemical safety. They were concerned that no insidious influence creep into the provincial atmosphere without their knowledge and without proper precautions. Dr. Somerville pointed out that no legislation or regulations existed in the province or the country regarding TEL, but that in view of the general interest he had asked those present to attend. Dr. Somerville stated that a vacancy existed for a Director of Occupational Health in his department. This appointment had not been filled due to the lack of qualified applicants and certain salary classification, presently under revision, preventing his ability to offer an attractive remuneration. There is no direct connection between this position and the University appoint ment of Professor of Preventive Medicine, recently filled by Dr. Stanley Greenhill.
