ASBESTOS-RELATED MEDICAL FINDINGS
(Letter C. DeMartino-R. E. Drexel, et al 10/20) (Note H. G. Smyth-B. W. Karrh 11/26)
The program to evaluate and identify case* of asbestos-related medical findings among Du Pont employees and pensioners is progressing well. Seventy-six Company physicians have attended the asbestos x-ray familiarization courses. With a few exceptions, ell the consents we have received from these physicians have been positive.
A significant number of asbestos-related abnormalities are being detected among employees considered to be at greatest risk -- mechanical craftsmen over age 40 with more than 10 years' service. A formal report will not be available until after March 31, 1981, but we still anticipate more than 500 and possibly as many as 1,000 cases of asbestos-related abnormalities for which we will probably be liable.
We are planning another course for plant nurses in making x-rays for February, 1981, and will continue to evaluate the adequacy of x-ray programs during our plant surveys.
