The chips submitted by you were analyzed in the Analytical Laboratory using microscopic analysis as well as solvent treatment. The following is a sum mary of the results;
1. Microscopic Examination
The outside surface areas of the chips showed a flawless surface with no unusual contamination of dust or other foreign particles. The wall side of the chips showed sporadic contamination of what was found to be old paint which is assumed to be from a previous paint coat. It is suspected that the old coat was of a different nature than the white paint, by virtue of the paint texture.
2. Solvent Treatment
Based on the above observations, the samples were subjected to treat ment with tetrahydrofuran, acetone and heptane. Acetone and heptane allowed the removal of the old coat from the white paint coat, indicat ing solubility of the old coat.
It is suspected that the combination of different types of paint, oil base versus latex base, without a pretreatment with a sealer may have caused excessive pealing. Furthermore, some of the chips showed blister type spheres which give rise to the suspicion that the surface, while painted, was not completely dry.
