GYPSUM C "RESEARCH CENTER February 23rd, 1973 For those of you who have not heard, joint compound was recently publicized in a Sunday N. Y. Times article - copy attached - as an asbestos carrier. It was strongly linked to a case of lung cancer by Dr. Selikoff, a specialist on asbestos diseases. To our knowledge this is the first, and certainly the strongest/most direct, publicity associating drywall joint compounds and asbestos fiber. The inquiries have begun. We have already answered several from the East. I'm sure the publicity will spread, in some form or degree beyond the East. This is to offer you some guidelines in such cases - - 1. Do not attempt to answer any inquiries on the contents of our products. 2. ' Attempt to get any oral inquiries submitted in writing. 3. Direct these inquiries to us for handling.
