Lohman Subject: EMPLOYEES PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS Internal Correspondence Date: March 8, 198^ Received Af/*ft 12 1984 PLAINTIFF'S I have reviewed the proposed physical examination guidelines for PVC personnel, asbestos exposed personnel, and office personnel. _Section*1001 of the Federal Occupational Safety S Health Standards requires that all employees exposed to airborne concentrations of asbestos fibers be provided an annual comprehensive physical examination. This is in conflict with Mr. Ed Wang's recommended medical program for employees exposed to airborne asbestos fibers. . Mr. Wang's proposed guidelines only provide for a physical exam of the respiratory and gastrointestinal system every three years for those workers under kO, with less than 10 years of exposure. Another problem we are farced with-in Denison is that 95% of our employees are exposed to airborne asbestos fibers at some time. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to determine who should get what type of physical. It is my recommendation that all employees at Denison receive the physical exam outlined in Table II, with the following changes: ' Item #2 ~ Periodic exam - General physical exam to include an exam of the respiratory and gastrointestinal system by a licensed physician - Annual ADD I tern #12 - Obtaining serum specimen to determine total bilirubin, alkaline,-phosphatase, SGOT, SGBT, and gamma gluatamyl - All pre employment, periodic as'- outlined in item #9 of Table 1, termination exam as outlined in item #9 of Table'!. According to the survey results, we have no areas in our plant that are equal to or above the current action level for VCM (0-5PPM). Based on these results, we will eliminate the SMAC 20 blood test from our physical exam program effective immediately. We are also eliminating the EKG from our physical exam program.
