RE; ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH COMMITTEE MEETING 11-25-75 - ASBESTOS FOLLOWUP
The new proposed standards for asbestos were reviewed. It was generally /agreed that the more stringent standards will be nearly impossible to achieve. The proposal calls for a level of 0.5 fibers per cubic millimeter.
John Blessinger commented briefly on replies from Pat Minturn of Electrode and Mike Scherbak of Ingot.
John Pierce will ask Bill Miner to poll other Alcoa locations regarding their use or substitute for thermocouple wire Insulated with asbestos.
Bovard and Werner will ask for corporate recommendations for substitutes and/or experience in "like-usage" of asbestos products^at other locations.
Bovard will request Don Wooden, Purchasing, to continue supplier information quest for substitutes. Wooden will attend the next meeting in January.
R. J. Hosfeld will expedite transition from asbestos paper plugs to foil in siphons used in tapping.
Ed Skowyra agrees the new TLV will not be attainable in transite and marinite shaping operations.
Transite use in pot ducts and water lines was discussed briefly.
Bill Moore has acquired fiberglassgubstitute which will be recyclable in interleaving on age oven usa-wtth T-52 stock. It may be acceptable but imposes handling precautions to avoid skin irritation. Education and instruction will be in order for employees expected to handle the substitute.
Bill assures us of increased effort to comply with handling and disposal of residual asbestos paper expected in use while evaluating the substitute. Asbestos monitoring in that site has failed to show airborne contaminant but the standard implies prohibitive protection, monitoring and surveillance routines which make a substitute sedm economically and practically the only alternative.
Another meeting is to be scheduled in mid-January.
