Nevertheless, in areas involving dry operations personnel wore appropriate respirators. I recommend that this practice be continued until enough information is available that shows we are well within the existed limit of 5.0 fibers/ml and the soon-to-come limit of 2.0 fibers/ml. For one interval during the activity of the bagger-loader operator in the standard grade area, the concentration of fiber exceeded 10/ml which I believe is an action point in the OSHA regulation even though the weighted average is less than 5 fibers/ml. I believe, you will wish to check in to this. A08384 Mr. F. H. Larrison --4^ August 7, 1973 I don't know why this jump in concentration occurred. The fiber concentrations outside the buildings did not appear to be significant during this visit as witness the results for the south fence line with a north to south wind. I have seen worse days. MINE: Fiber concentrations at the mine site were not high even though a brisk wind was blowing. It is interesting to note that the highest readings were obtained inside the closed cab of the Michigan loader rather than on the open seat of the Caterpillar bulldozer. On the latter, however, it was noted that there is a considerable exposure to diesel exhaust fumes. The quantity may not be excessive but it quickly shows on a filter paper sampler. All personnel at the mine site wore respirators, a practice which I believe should continue to be encouraged regardless of present findings. Very truly yours, RfM: jr P. W.
