C- / L L */ -12- /t/.t t t7 7 / Hr, Zimmerman then proceeded to briefly describe the first safety seminar which was recently held in New Jersey, Due to the success of this program and the response from the member company per sonnel in attendance, the Safety Committee has recommended that the Safety Seminar be accepted as a continuing activity of the Safety Com mittee, and that future seminars be held at various locations through out the country. Chairman Zimmerman noted that the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has prepared a criteria docu ment on all toxic and hazardous materials in plant* and that asbestos 1$ listed as the number one hazardous material. Maximum exposure permitted is two asbestos fibers per day. Annual X-rays are required for employees having more than ten years service in asbestos environ ments. For employees wearing respirators, exposure Is limited to 45 minutes out of each hour. Any product containing more than J% asbestos must be marked with a warning label. Mr. Zimmerman noted that members should be aware of this problem area and should work together as never before to develop acceptable working standards with asbestos. Mr. Zimmerman briefly referred to standards also being produced with respect to asbestos by the Environmental Protection Agency. Hr. Zimmerman reported that the rules being developed by QSHA and NIOSH for the asbestos Industry should serve as a warning to the gypsum industry. There is a need to work together in an industry team effort to study our own deficiencies so that the problems encountered hy the asbestos industry can be avoided. Industry spokesmen need to know and talk to Washington representatives so that the industry posi tion and efforts are made known early. The report of the Safety Committee was accepted with thanks. REPORT OF THE MANUFACTURING ANO MINING COMMITTEE Hr. W. W. Holloway, Chairman of the Manufacturing and Mining Committee, gave the report for his committee. Mr. Holloway indicated that a principal function of the com mittee is to help implement the recommendations of several other stand ing committees. He noted there now is an additional need to evaluate the massive amount of data being generated by various agencies affect ing the industry. The Manufacturing and Mining Committee proposes to deal with data in three general areas through the Association. 1. Surveillance - what to do and when 2. Act on legislation at all levels 3.
