Subject:
Deterioration of Overhead Firing Asbestos Covering Canton Plant
The overheo i riving asbestos covering at the Carr '-n Plant h?.s deteriorated to the pcir.t that building vibration i.-vino:-;. ly overhead traveling crr.neo; presses, etc., c-.vases the flaking asbestos to fall. The larger pieces are often ground into fines by industrial trucks and pecvst-rian traffic. Although tre J.avger pieces are the most obvious manifestation, an observer would have :io way of estimating the amount of asbestos precipitated in less than "cnur.k" si::-.
In recognition of the priority associated with asbestos related health hazards, the CSHA asbsstos: star, iuri is without question the most pa'olicir.ad substance control e f f o r t `undertaken by the la.cor depart..lent. The publicity has created a broad based public understanding that asbestos is a significant potential health hazard. The Ford hotcr Company Aaroinogons in the Work Place Tosh in early 1hsO "selected asbestos for priority attention". In April of 19-G, a Company-wide audit was conducted tc identify asbestos usage and to alert plant personnel tc the priority associated with the elimination of asbestos and/or asbestos containing materials. As ar. extension of the Corporate Program, the Employe Health Services has developed a 17 minute slide film presentation which will be distributed within the next 60 days with instructions that it shall be reviewed annually with all employes whose classification would potentially re quire that they intrude cn previously installed asbestos, be can anticipate that the specific ar.d elaborate requirements for employes intruding in asbestos installations (oipe repair, automotive brake service, etc.), will result ar. employe challenge of all installations where the asbestos is not effectively contained.
The purpose of this communication is tc formally request your direction in
determining:
o Is asbestos being liberated at Canton.
o Is the rate of liberation, a health hazard.
