LESSON ONE-MODULE 2 DRUM BRAKE WHEEL CYLINDERS BRAKE SYSTEM SERVICE Inspecting a Wheel Cylinder for Leaks When inspecting drum brake wheel cylinders pull back the dust boot slightly, look for excessive fluid leakage. A slight amount of fluid is almost always present and acts as a lubricant for the piston. Many vehicles do not have rebuildable wheel cylinders. Honing of these wheel cylinders will damage the hard, highly polished surface of the wheel cylinder's bore. If there is excessive leakage, replace the complete wheel cylinder. Make sure the wheel cylinder pistons are not frozen in their bore. If the wheel cylinder pistons are stuck, replace the cylinder. Check the wheel cylinder mounting on the backing plate for looseness or missing fasteners.
