BOX 471, TEXAS CITY, TEXAS 77590 February 20, 1975 subject VFA Analysis For VC1 At The Suspension/Non-Solvent Unit The VC1 data from the VFA instrument in the Suspension/Non-SoLvent Unit for January is attached. Table I shows a summary of the number of high readings for the period since the instrument was installed through January, Basically, the data shows that initially the number of high readings were decreasing but appears to have been relatively stable for the November-January period. Table II shows the data by location for January. The current problem areas (based on the critical few-locations with 40 readings exceeding 25 ppm) are: 1. Tank Area 4, Ground Level - The high readings were primarily due to leaking pump seals on the VCM tanks in Tank Area 4. 2. The Off-Gas Recovery System - This system continued to dump seal water to the sewer because of inadequate control of the liquid level in the seal water tank. This is scheduled to be remedied by increasing the size of the motor valve and pipe from j" to 1" by February 15. A mechanical seal was installed on the Nash Hytor compressor during January which should also decrease leakage. 3. Second Level, East line - Several causes were involved - leaking valves, plugged lines from the autoclaves, and vents from other areas of the Unit. UCC 094510 Mr. R. L. Frantz -2- February 20, 1975 4. The Compressor Room in Bldg. 119 - Although steps have been taken to eliminate leakage, the compressors still constitute a problem. However, entry of personnel into the room is seldom required. 5. Bldg. 119, S. Side, N.W. of Strip. Tank - Reasons listed were No. 2 blowdown tank to pad, recovered VC1 pump seal leaking, and changing out pump in Tank Area 4. Table III gives the number of readings above 2 5 ppm for each day in January by point number. This data shows particular days when one point may be the major contributor for that day.
