Supply, L? S. mine production of lead in 1962 had reached a record low since the turn of the century. Due largely to a prolonged strike at the Missouri mines of St. Joseph Lead Co. The strike, which began in late July, caused a loss of roughly 10.000 tpm of lead production. This strike was settled a| the beginning of April 196); and, as a result, mine production of lead in 1963 was some 20,000 Ions higher than in the earlier year. Sec ondary kad production also ihow'cd an increase of about 20,000 tone.
On the other hand, imports dect:.ied about 40,000 tons, balancing the in crease in domestic production. Imports were equal to the government-estab lished quotas and were down, because cf iiTipOili foi vUfvkpiic ffuilt Auitialia and Csnada in 1962 which were out side the quota and resulted from a barter arrangement with those coun tries dating back 10 1961.
Therefore, the lead available to C S. industry In 1963 totaled about 1.035.000 tons or about 40.000 tons more than in 1962, when 64,000 font had to be drawn from producers' inventories to supply the demand of 1.11-million tons. However, consum ers' demands rose to about 1,166.000 tons in 1963, an increase of about 5**: and some 0.000 tons or more had to b; taken from producers' stocks. This Waves pig Wad inven
