LETSINGER DAVENPORT WORKS DAVENPORT WORKS RE: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE MEETING A* PLAINTIFFS EXHIBIT AL-290 A meeting of the above committee was held March 19, 1963, at 12:30 p.m. in the small dining room of the main cafeteria. Attending the meeting were Messrs. J. 0. Vanest, G. J. Myers, B. T. Evans, B. L. Tiedemann, C. L. Huey, W. ?. Kneeland, R,. J. Nemetz, B.' D. Kent, J. E. Hatch, J. H. Lowry, and Dr. A. W. Schafer. Mr. J. 0. Vanest reported cn grievances initiated by the local union aimed at wage structure aajustments based on disagreeable working areas and conditions. The committee was brought up to date on the coacer house problem. A substantial serai-permanent hood has now been installed covering the strip from the., coater to the oven and samples were taken the morning of March 19. These samples have been sent to ARL. SHEET No....... ................... access for the operator. It is hoped that the present hoods will reduce the fumes to a tolerable level. If they do not further steps must be taken with no delay. The smoke problem on the Ty-sa-man saw is pretty well resolved in that Zelec, a detergent type additive tends to lessen or eliminate this problem. Tests using this compound will be repeated and the final decision made by the end of March. Mr. Myers reported that the 160" mill ventilation has been referred to Mr. B. R. Small of Pittsburgh Central Engineering who promised to report sometime this week on recommendations made by Davenport. i It was brought up in the meeting that a possible heat problem could exist in the scalper areas during the summer months since the adjacent courtyard has been covered. Mr. Kent reported that the two new south soaking pits will have to have a permanent type cover and that when the cover is installed the heat in the pits will be unbearable for maintenance people and servicemen. Mr. Hatch suggested to Mr. Myers that Engineering and Mr. Griswold look into this problem immediately. An air conditioner for the 160" mill crane has been ordered but not received to date. Mr. Myers will expedite and follow the status of this requisition. Samples taken in the remelt area around the 2020 furnace were sent to ARL March 5. Additional changes are to be made in this area to the ventilating system after which resampling will be done. Mr. Myers reported that it was his understanding that Mr. R. L. Hanson has been instructed to contact an outside consultant concerning the disposal of waste Alodine. Mr. Myers also reported that the spray booth ventilation system in the paint shop has been enlarged and should be adequate for any future need. He also reported that the electrical shop would attempt to eliminate spraying and substitute a dip or solid stream for cleaning small motors with Stoddard Solvent and methylene chloride. Mr. Myers also reported that a noise problem in the heat treat furnace and Ty-sa-man saw area of the plate mill would soon be overcome. A new pressure reducing station for the steam lines in this area has been received and will soon be installed. Mr. Huey reported that the coil preparation line would soon be in service and that this area should be kept under surveillance since it is anticipated that a large amount of Stoddard Solvent will be used. A vacuum type still will be put into service for cleaning the solvent. It was reported that the laboratory had evaluated three of the hand soaps in use at Davenport Works. Klex, a bar soap, was found to contain 38.77% pumice and Bora-Pax, a powdered soap, was found to contain 28.60% sand. It was pointed out that the excessive amount of sand was expensive and in the case of the powdered hand soap (Bora-Pax) clogging of sink drains had resulted. It was suggested by the committee that a letter be written to the Purchasing Department outlining the company standards set up for hand cleaners, and that substitutes for these two soaps can be found and evaluated. At Mr. Kneeland's suggestion it was agreed to limit the circulation of committee report copies. It will be the responsibility of each committee member to see that their respective Division Superintendents see a copy of the report.
