Director Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Victoria Hospital London Ontario Canad Met Ass 3 Aug. 7 1965 Vol 93 ASBESTOS AND CANCER To the Editor I found the Special Report on the subject of Asbestos and Cancer published in the Journal issue of May 8 Canad Med Ass J. 92 1020 1965 most informa- tive and as a sincere admirer of the work done in the field of public health 1 beg to be allowed to bring to the attention of the Journal's readers an aspect of exposure to asbestos dust which was not mentioned in the report Only recently did I learn that when a vehicle is taken in for brake work the mechanic cleans the drums and wheels by blowing the dust with a high- pressure air hose The volume of dust raised is un- believable and it drifts about in the shop for a long time before it floats out or settles down in the shop The mechanic inhales this during the blowing procedure and again when dusting I understand that many mechanics are not aware that there is asbestos as well as metallic dust in the air Another example of brake dust blown by air pressure I trust that this bit of information will be received in the spirit in which it is intended Mus ARTien G.
