At a recent meeting in-Greve Coeur, Glenn Schweitzer, head of the Off Toxic Substances of EPA, offered some interesting comments. He obser' that Monsanto's toxicologists were held in high regard at EPA. Howev< since it lacked an in-house toxicology facility, Monsanto as a compan; not as highly regarded overall as duPont, Carbide, or Dow.
Dr. Wright's professional and personal characteristics have contribut nificantly to Monsanto's image at EPA. He has shown unusual persever, and dedication, frequently involving his own time, to review and inte: large volumes of data which he subsequently organized for presentatioi EPA officials. Particularly noteworthy wer* his efforts on polychlor; biphenyls (Aroclors) and chlorinated isocyanurates (ACL products). Ij former instance, his excellent analysis and synthesis of widely scatti observations played a prominent role in forestalling EPA's promulgate unrealistic regulations to limit discharges of polychlorinated biphen; EPA's proposed regulations would have precluded the use of these mate: by Monsanto's customers. With respect to chlorinated isocyanurates, Dr. Wright has had several contacts with individual scientists at EPA answer specific questions that they had raised or to inform them of tl status of additional studies which, had been undertaken*
Overall, by virtue of the qualities of leadership which Dr. Wright ha played, he has made an important contribution to Monsanto's image at That favorable image will become increasingly important to Monsanto a areas of interaction with EPA multiply.
