As requested, ve recen tly evaluated ttm n ix room operation from th e environmental h ealth aspect In response to a union grievance. Airborne p a rtic u la te s e t t e r and vapor saoples were obtained a t various process lo c atio n s v i t hln the ro as. Zn add itio n , a i r flo v measurements on the exhaust system were performed. Data
obtained are lis te d on the attached sheets.
V entilation: As in d icated on the attached d ata sh e e ts, exhaust volumes were found to be low in comparison w ith the ra te d o r designed exhaust system w ith the exception o f the south w all ducts which were up to design capacity. Ibe system th a t provides a i r through c ellin g d iffu se rs did n o t appear to be operating during various periods of the study. This was determined by p e rio d ic a lly checking the roof in le t o f the mix room system. I t would appear th a t the a i r supply is th erm o statically c o n tro lle d to tu rn on and o f f . With the a i r supply o ff , the work area tends to become a "dead a i r space" ; th is i s apparent from the location of tim exhaust and supply d u cts. A ir is exhausted a t the sid es o f the room while fre sh a i r i s supplied in to the cen te r of the room.

dust exposure is not considered a p o ten tial health hazard a t th is time.
Operations on the aezzaalne oonelet o f sev eral employes p e rio d ic a lly opening end dumping bags o f the dry c o n stitu e n ts in to hoppers. Evaluation o f the raw m aterials used in d icate th a t t t e in g red ien t asb esto s would be o f lvsedlm te concern. A fter prolonged in h a la tio n o f asb esto s d u st in excessive concentr a t io c s , a form of pneumoconiosis known a s a sb e sto sis could occur.
Airborne dust samples obtained during snd a f t e r the p e rio d ic opening and dumping of bags containing aabeatoa revealed concentrations w ell w ithin the acceptable level of five m illion p articles per cubic foot of a ir.

The consistency of the asbestos during the study vas in a re lativ ely "caked" condition, thus minimizing dust dispersion. Based on observation and dust con
centrations obtained, no immediate health hazard vas found. As a precautionary measure against the effects of unforeseen process or ventilation control changes, ve recommend th a t preplacement chest X-rays be obtained on personnel assigned to th is work and th a t serious consideration be given to obtaining periodic X-rays on exposed personnel. A reviev of the other constituents revealed m aterial th a t is considered to be physiologically in e rt or of such small quantities as not to be
of immediate concern.
Vaoor: Exposure to the polyester resin used in the process vas evaluated. To ouTunderstanding the monomer used for formation of the resin is vinyl toluene. Vinyl toluene is a mixture of the isomers of methyl styrene and has been reported to be sim ilar in toxic properties to monomeric styrene. Exposure to excess vapor concentrations could cause narcotic symptoms, hovever, the ch aracteristic odor and ir r ita n t quality of the vapors makes voluntary exposure to excessive levels
unlikely.
The threshold lim it value of vinyl toluene is 100 parts per m illion p arts of a ir (ppm); th is is related to vorker comfort rather than physiological e ffe c t. The ch aracteristic odor is reported to be detectable a t 25-50 ppm.
Vapor concentrations and odor vere negative in the general area of the mix room indicating adequate ventilation control over the resin mix tanks. The character is tic odor vas quite noticeable and vapor concentrations vere detectable in the immediate v ic in ity of the main floor vork stations involving removal of the freshly
sized "mud" cords for stacking. I t vas noted th a t vapor concentrations vere reduced only slig h tly vhen the overhead a ir supply vas operating indicating th at additional d ilu tio n a ir may be needed to bring vapor concentrations v ith in a range
vhereby employes v i l l not detect the odor as readily.
Other Items or Exposure: As you knov, precautions in avoiding repeated skin contact v ith the resin is recommended to prevent drying and ir r ita tio n of the skin.
The benzoyl peroxide, or lucidol, th a t is added in the mixing process is knovn to explode spontaneously. Extreme care in the storing and handl i ng of th is
m aterial is recommended.
In conclusion, no immediate health hazards vere found during the study of the m lv w room operation. To insure th a t employes performing vork on the mezzanine have not been exposed to excessive asbestos dust, preplacement and periodic chest
X-rays should be taken.

Sufficient and constant dilution ventilation should be provided a t the main floor operations fo r reduction of vapor concentrations to v ith in acceptable comfort
levels.

With regard to the referenced re p o rt, the fo llo v in g is in order:
During the phone conversation i t was in d icated to me th a t the mix room had not been in use fo r some time and during i t s shutdown had been deemed once. I t vas fu rth e r Indicated to me th a t asbestos contam ination e x iste d in the duct systems as measured by In d u s tria l hygiene and toxicology.
I t was discussed th a t a two stage cleanup was a reasonable approach irresp e ctiv e
of a co n tracto r o r Fbrd employes doing the work. The f i r s t stage would be to
remove the ducts c u rre n tly contaminated w ith a sb e sto s. Wet methods would be
used and other precautions in d icated by In d u s tria l Ifygiene and toxicology would
be followed. A fter duct removal, areas th a t might have been recontaminated
with asbestos would be addressed by In d u s tria l Ifygiene and toxicology and, i f
indicated, properly cleaned as the second s ta te o f deem ing.
