Sample Ho. $T5 < 5 Xf (Film P976).
The diffraction pattern ia of fair quality but somewhat faint, indicating tie sample to contain an appreciable non-crystalline fraction. Tie major crystalline ccspcnerrt is p-Ca0*S10s and there is a minor amount of CaCOa. Quartz is not detected and, if present, oust not constitute sore than about 2$ of the gargle.
A masher of lines remain unexplained, two of considerable strength.. They are not due to chrysotlle asbestos nor to other varieties of asbestos for which data are innediately available. However, the diffraction data on asbestos are not Mgfrly reliable or complete. Furthermore, tie asbestos
minerals give poor quality powisr diffraction patterns and are not readily identifiable by x-ray diffraction meana alone.
Saggie Ho. 373 > 5 ^(mm POO?).
The pattern is ths same as the above except that the lines of quarts appear. Spectrometer analysis shews the quartz content to be l6. The spottlnecs of the quartz lines shows that a considerable fraction of it is rather coarse, mean particulate dimension perhaps 5C-1CC microns. As
in the < 5 M fraction, tha major constituent is 0-CaC-SiO^ and a minor
amount of CaCos la present.
Patterns of Raw Materials;
Asbestos (Film P98I) -- The pattern observed is due almost entirely to quartz, which constitutes about lC-15^ of the material. Only three Hues of appreciable strength remain, aid they do not check the available asbestos data.
Kenita (Film P9G2) -- Ths material is largely amorphous. It gives a faint clay-like pattern which is too diffuse in nature to be observed : >% a mixture with the patterns of other materials, as in Sample 373*
Ci-fty (Film P985} -- The material Is predcainaaiy kaoliaite and gives a good diffraction pattern. It should ^e possible to detect >.-. concentrations down to about 1C, but It was not observed in Sample
