NEW LAND IN TR O D U C T IO N This report has been prepared, by instruction of the State G eologist, to m eet a quite insistent local demand. T h ere is a con* siderable production of limestone. feldspar, laic, pyrites and zinc blende within ihe quadrangle lim its; a number o f people are keenly interested in the m ineral developm ent, arc actively engaged in pros pecting. and g rea tly desire a more accurate and serviceable areal map o f the district than has heretofore been available. Both M r Newland and m yself are under obligation to several of these gentle* men for courtesies o f many kinds, freely extended on m any occasions. T h e Gouverneur district was the starting point from which P ro fessor C . H . S m yth prosecuted his im portant w ork on the P re Cambrian geology o f the western Adirondack's, w ork which did m uch to establish the fundam ental basis o f our present kn ow ledge. B y a!! rights o f service and o f priority in the region he should have prepared this report, and the w riter undertook the task w ith the greatest reluctance aitd only when it became evident that the w o rk could not be delayed, and that Professor Sm yth was not in a position to do It at this lim e. T h e areal mapping which is the basis o f this report docs little m ore than 10 reproduce Sm yth's earlier results upon a more accurate map o f larger scale. T h e indebtedness o f the present w ork to his can not lie made too emphatic. Doctor Buddington was engaged in mapping Ihe Lake Bonaparte quadrangle, next south o f Gouverneur, during the 1916 season. W e studied our jo in t boundary toeether. to <v*r -.4...---- ---* prism an*J pyramid. Mussivc quartz, white or vitreous, occurs very w idely in veins that intersect ill o f the rocks and are most common around the borders o f (he porphyritic granite. The quartz has the characters of magmatic quartz; it appears in practically pure bodies and in combination with feldspar as pegmatites o f varied com* position. T he occurrence o f quartz in the Grenville limestone where it produces banded and ribbed structures is described in the earlier part of this report. The limestone on the borders o f Sylvia lake especially abounds in q u a n t which stands out os white hummocks and reefs above the surfaee. ' Chert and jasper are occasionally in evidence around the zinc deposits of the Edw ards district. A considerable body of chert occurs on the limestone ridge that 's mined b;; the Northern Ore Company, just north of Edwards. Serpentine. T his mineral abounds in the Edwards limestone belt as nodules and bunches enclosed by the carbonates. Most of the serpentine. as shown by Sm yth.1 is pseudomorpliic after dlopside. whereas talc, the other important secondary mineral in the lime stone. is derived from tremolite. A peculiar whitish..Serpentine, seemingly of low iron content, is found in a quarry n_the limestone area near P e abody bridge. ^nonK^of Gouverneur. According tn local accounts, the mineral was thought to be talc and some of it was ground and sold for the same purposes for which talc is em ployed. It ts noticeably harder than talc and has rather an oily histcr. S ph alerite. Occurrences are noted in the lead veins of Rossie and Macomb as an accompaniment of galena, pyrite and chalcopy- rite. fn the Edwards district it is associated with pyrite and occurs in replacement bodies in the Grenville limestones. These are de scribed elsewhere under their own title. T a lc . O ne o f the important economic minerals of the Gouver neur district is talc. It is reserved for special description. T ila n ite . Fair-sized recognizable crystals of Mamie are found in some o f the limestone-granite contacts, as near the Gouverneur marble quarriet south of the village and in the vicinity of No. 2yi tale mine. Fethaps the best known occurrence of litis lype, from which have come most o f the museum specimens that bear the locality name Gouverneur, is on the Reese farm. 2 miles southwest o f Richville. on Ihe Rock Island School road. It is described in some detail by Cushing on p a ge 20. Good crystals of brown color are also to be had from the Rylestone marble quarry, southwest o f Gouverneur. The blackvariety is a common accompaniment of the pegmatite bodies, ail over the district, so widely scattered that specific mention o f the localities seems unnecessary. As a constituent of he Grenville gneisses it uccurs in various colors and locally may form 50 per cent o f the entire rock mass. (See page 24.) T rem o lite. This .member o f the amphibole group is abundantly developed along the borders of some limestone areas, particularly the fidw crds-Sylvin lake belt where great bodies o f nearly pure tremo.llte in the form 01 crystalline aggregates appear along the con tact and for some distance toward the inter ior of the belt. It is usually white in color and developed in long Hades or needles wjthout crystal terminations. The crystals are 50 interlaced that they make a very tough rock, although in the mass the latter appears to be of schistose structure. Bands o f the tremolite may be traced for long distances parallel witlt the strike of the limestone. All of the talc mines are situated along these bands, with the tremolite form ing one or both walls o f the deposit. T he pink or purplish form 01 tremolite, called hexagonitc, is a handsome mineral which occurs in the walls of the mines at Talcville, particularly on the southwestern end. and in the mines near Sylvia lake. Large masses of it are still available in the rock dumps 01 the old United States T alc Company's mine. V esu vian fte. The only locality so far recorded for this mineral within the map limits, is t mile south of Gouverneur, probably one o f the marble quarries. The locality is mentioned by Whitlock.' W a d . This mineral is found in association with bog limonite in some o f the Edwards and Gouverneur occurrences. W ern erite. Sporadic occurrences of wernerite as a contact min eral are reported in the Grenville limestones. It is observed at Taleviilc and in the Gouverneur marble quarries. Chemical analysis section w N*KW YOXK STATE MUSEUM new deposits formed of any importance, and those already existing' were little modified during the interval. Consequently he occurrence o f Potsdam has little or no bearing upon the existence o i mineral deposits in the underlying Prccambrian. There is the same livelihood o i finding them under the sandstone as in she exposed formations, other things being equal. List of Minerals and Mineral Localities Preliminary to the description of the 'deposits o f economic im por tance, brief mention will be made of the various minerals whieh have been noted as native to the district and of their local occurrence. T h e list Ot mineral species for the district embraces a large number that have no special value imiustrially, as in fact the useful min erals generally constitute only a small proportion o f those actually known. The vicinity ot Gouverneur has provided a great array o f minerals in the w ay o f crystallized and uncommon physical form-, and not a little that has served as type material fo r purposes ni scientific description or illustration, so that an enumeration ot the individual speeies with information- o' their occurrence may prove serviceable to the student and collector. In the compilation of the mineral occurrences information has been draw., to some exlent from published sources, notably Dana's M anual .which is valuable principally for the data about the early discoveries, from the reports o f the First Geological Su rvey o f Mew Y o rk State arid particularly those by Emmons and Beck, and from W hitlock's N ew Y o rk Mineral Localities.1 T h e last-named work is the n r complete in its references to the mineral occurrences o f the district that has appeared up to the present time. T h e information thus made available has been supplemented by observations in the district by the w riler in the course of a field experience that extends through a period of many yean . Although attention is restricted generally to those occurrences within the limits of the map, a few localities of particular interest that are found in the bordering areas will be included, for which Gouverneur would muiralty lie used as a base hy any one intending to visit such places. A ctin o lite. T his variety ot amphibole occurs lit characteristic development o f thin bladed and fibrous crystals in the walls o f the talc mines in the town o f Edwards. It has the same methods of occurrence ?.* tremolite, the. common parent mineral nf the talc, and ` N. V. T he crystals occur in felted or matted intergrowths, as actmolUt schist. T h e country rock is limestone, but porphyritie granite appears nearby. A lb ite. Soda feldspar is present in some o f the pegmatite bodies, as one o f the essential constituents. It 3 associated usually with miereeline and may be tntergrown with it as perthite. One of the localities w here both varieties are found in large crystals or masses is at the quarry now being worked for pottery spar on the road between Richvjl|e station and East D e K alb, 3 miles northeast o f the former place. A m ph ibo le. T h e members of this mineral family are mentioned under their specific names, a) far as they are recognized. (Sre actinolite and tremolite.) Various aluminous amphiboies are rep resented, o f which the exact composition and type ha* not been determined. O ne o f the common forms is o f greenish color in pris matic shapes. 10 be classed probably with the variety pargasite. It is found in the limestones, often associated with tremolite and diopside. Localities a r t the Calvin Mttehel farm in East De Kalb, the zinc mines at Edsvards arid the vicinity of T alcville. Darker green or black amphibole Is an important ingredient of the gneisses; one o f the gneissie rocks developed on the borders o f the Edwards limestone belt consists largely o f this mineral and is described in the first part o f the report under She name "amphibolite." It is believed to be derived from gabbro, in which case the amphibole is probably 'derived from an aluminous pyroxene. Black or green amphibole is also an accompaniment of some o f the Grenville schists. A p a tite, Crystals of apatite, greenish or reddish in color, small to fairly large in size, occur in the crystalline limestones, notably in the marble qbarrics north and south oF Gouverneur. T h e quar ries just southwest o f the town have supplied examples of the usual six-sided prisms, terminated by the unit pyramid. 4 to 6 inches long. B e c k 1 records a crystal nearly a foot long and weighing 18 pounds from the Robinson farm , town o f Hammond, which is outside the limits o f Ihe map. T his locality is perhaps the same as that listed by W hitlock as near D eLong's mills. A sb e sto s.
