The performance of a paint job, regardless of the materials used, is dependent on the cleanliness and smoothness of the surface and the conditions under which, the paint is.applied.
We have outlined below the basic requirements aid have indicated the typical prepaxution-ofsurface specifications that have been found ade quate-.
T. Dirt and foreign matter must be removed. Loose dirt may be removed by blowihg clean with ax pressure or bristle brushes. It is important that surface deposits of oil or grease are not spread Over additional areas in the cleaning process.
2. Glossy Surfaces on old paint films should be roughened to provide a "tooth". This may be ac complished by sanding the surface or applying S-W Preparite.
3. Mold or Mildew must be removed com pletely from the surface. Use tri-sodium phosphate solution (6 oz. per gallon) or a proprietary mildewicide. Rinse thoroughly with clear water and allow to dry before painting.
4. Oil and Grease should be removed with mineral spirits or S-W Exolvent.
5, Rust and Mill Scale--These can be removed by sandblasting, flame cleaning or wire brushing (manual or power). Blasting to white metal pro duces the best possible surface for painting. The application of the priming coat of paint should be the same day the surface is cleaned, and in the case of sandblasLing, within 2 to 3 hours.
6. Exterior Wood must be clean and dry. No painting to be done immediately after a rain or <luring rainy weather, or when the temperature is below 50F. Knots and pitch streaks shall be scraped or burned, then coated with shellac before priming coat is applied. All nail holes or small openings shill be carefully filled with White Lead Putty after the priming coat has dried.
7. Exteribr Brick, Stucco and Concrete shall be free from dirt and loose or excess mortar. New concrete, brick and stuccD shall be allowed to cure at least 6, months before painting. If necessary to paint sooner, treat Surface with zinc sulphate wash (3 lbs. per gallon of water), brushing surface free of loose crystals when dry. Do not paint after a rain but allow several days for thorough drying.
a. Structural Steel shall be cleaned free of mill scale, rust and foreign matter by (1) sandblasting (2) flame cleaning (3) wire brushing or (4) scraping. Any grease shall be removed with solvent. Loose and scaling paint shall be scraped and wire brushed to sound metal. Dust and dirt, should be removed by dry brushing or air blast prior to painting. No paint shall be applied over a damp or frosted surface, or when the temperature is below'SO'F.
9. Galvanized Iron shall be cleaned thoroughiy with solvent to remove grease and residue on the surface. Satisfactory preparation may be obtained with chemical washes used as directed by the manu facturer. For best results, new galvanized iron should be allowed to weather 6 months prior to painting. All galvanized iron shall be given a special primer such as S-W Galvanized Iron Primer or S-W Grip-Clad Primer. Galvanized iron that has been exposed to the weather for long periods of time and shows rust shall be primed with a metal protective primer such as Kromik Metal Primer.
10. Copper Surfaces--In general most dil paints will adhere satisfactorily to copper, providing the surface is cleaned free of dirt and foreign matter.
11. Interior Plaster Walls must be allowed to dry thoroughly, usually requiring at least 30 days before painting. Ventilation while drying is essential and in cold, damp weather, rooms must be heated. Damaged places shall be repaired with Plastic Patch.
12. Interior Brick and Concrete must be thoroughly seasoned. Ventilation while drying is essential. Prior to painting, the surface shall be given a zinc sulphate wash (3 lbs. per gallon of water). When dry, the surface shall be brushed completely free of loose crystals.
13. Interior Woodwork and Trim--All fin ishing lumber and flooring shall be delivered pro tected from the weather and stored on the premises in dry warm rooms to prevent absorption of mois ture, shrinkage and roughening of the wood before finishing.
All surfaces shall be sanded smooth, with the grain and never across it. Surface blemishes shall be corrected and the room cleaned of dust before pro ceeding with finishing coats.
All enamel and varnish finishes shall be lightly sanded between cOats to a smooth finish.

SAVE-LITE PRIMER AND SEALER
To be used as the initial coat on new brick, concrete and plaster and over old paint which iy extremely porous. 11 provides a uniform base coat, which improves the hiding power and speeds lho application of the finish coal. This primer and settler offers the same advantages when used- under other Sherwin-Williams finishes such as Color Harmony Flat-Tone and Semi-Lustre. May also be used as first coat on new wood.
Application by brush or spray--Dries to recoat in 24 to 36 hours; covers 300 sq. ft. per gallon.
SAVE-LITE UNDERCOATER
This undercoater is designed as an intermediate coat over Save-Lite Primer and Sealer in three coat work on masonry. It is an excellent first coat over old paint in a two coat system where the final coat is one of the Save-Lite finishes. Also recommended as a first coat on new \vood in which case one pint raw linseed oil should be added per gallon of undercover. Save-Lite Undercoatejr can be dry-sanded if necessary and its use as sures a Smoother, more uniform appearance of the finished work.
Application by brush or spray--Dries to recoat in IS to 24 hours; covers 300 sq. ft. per gallon.
SAVE-L1TE PRODUCTS
Formaximum illumination in factories, offices, schools and stores, Save-Lite is the brand name identifying a line of intensely white paints designed to improve work ing illumination through their high light reflecting value. These,paints are manufactured only in white and are especially formulated to retain their whiteness for a long period of'time.
The Save-Lite White products are furnished in three types--Sa v e -Lig h t , Ke m Sa v e -Lit e and Ke m Fu me / n j Mo is t u r e Re s is t in g Sa v e -Lit e . Each is intended far a specific job, but any product carrying the SaveLite label must meet exacting standards of quality with especial regard for the following:
1. Maximum initial whiteness and color retention.
2. Economy through greater covering power and ease of application,
3. Durability and resistance to dirt accumulation.
Save-Lite; Is recommended for all paintable interior surfaces--wood, metal, brick, concrete, plaster and composition board. It is not an exterior paint.
SAVE-LITE WHITE
This is the mill white to use for normal service in factories, schools, offices etc. It is a fume-resistant, nonyellowing white with excellent light reflecting proper ties. It is furnished in Flat, Eg-Shel and Gloss finish. The Flat gives maximum diffusion of light which is an advantage from the standpoint of illumination. It is also especially designed for large scale spray applica tion, having the necessary opacity to hide fully in one coat with a minimum of spray fog.
Save-Lite Eg-Shel also gives excellent light diffusion (for glare-free illumination) with the advantage of greater washability and durability than can be attained withi a flat finish. Save-Lite Gloss has maximum washa bility and durability. It is widely used in textile mills, the paper industry and others where a rugged finish is required.
Application--Brush or spray; Dries to touch, Gloss 4-5 hours; Eg-Shel 3-4 hours; Flat 2 hours; Coverage-- Gloss 350-400 sq. ft. per gallon; Flat and Eg-Shel 300350 sq, ft. per gallon.

KEM FUME AND MOISTURE RESISTING SAVE-LITE WHITE
This is a, lead Tree, chemical resisting mill white with &-special-synthetic vehicle. It is resistant to moisture and is not discolored by relatively strong concentrations cf hydrogen sulphide, chlorine and ammonia fumes. It i- a true Sa ve-Lite in whiteness and non-yellowing prope rites. Available in Eg-Shel and G loss Fi nish, to be used as final coat only.
Application--Gloss by brush only; Eg-Shel by brush or spray--Dries to touch in 2-3 hours; to recoat in IS hours. Covers 300 to 350 sq. ft. j>er gallon.
COLD STORAGE SEMI-GLOSS WHITE
A special type of white paint for use in cold storage areas. Dries hard in approximately 72; hours. After that time, fumesiithat would contaminate food are no longer pven. off. This contrasts with conventional oil paints, which give off noticeable fumes many days after appli cation In closed areas.
Use one; i or two r coats as required to cover. Brush directly on the surface without primer or undcrcoatcr. Covers 250 sq. ft. per gallon.
EXOLVENT
A paint thinner of good solvent power, satisfactory for thinning oil and alkyd paints--superior to mineral spirits.

MARNOT VARNISH
This is our liighcst grade interior varnish for floor and woodwork. Tough, water, heat and acid resistant; it comes in two finishes--full gloss and satin finish.
Application --by brush or spray--Dries dust free in 2 hours. It is hard enough to walk on lightly in 16 hour.and can be recoated in 14 hours--Covers 550 sq* ft. per gallon.
REXPAR VARNISH
Best quality spar varnish. Its tough, elastic film is resistant to sun, moisture and weather. Recommended for all outside varnished surfaces and interior surfaces such as sills, sash, casings, etc. where there is an excess of moisture.
Application by brush or spray--Dries to touch in 2 to 13 hours; to recoat in 15 to 18 hours; covers 550 sq. ft. per gallon.
HEAVY DUTY FLOOR FINISH
An extremely hard and durable clear finish designed especiaUy to protect and preserve industrial floors of wood. This product, by actual test, will outwear any ordinary varnish by a wide margin. Heavy Duty Floor Finish is supplied in three forms: B64 V A2, a firstcoater or sealer; B64 F Al, a semi-gloss finish coat; and B64 V Al> a full gloss finish coat. Has good non-skid properties. Buffing to a dull finish is possible, but not necessary with this finish.
Application--by brush or mop. Dries hard overnight. Coverage approximately 450 sq. ft. per gallon for first coat and 500 sq. ft. per gallon for finish coats.

GYM FLOOR FINISH
formulated specifically to willistand wear and tear on gymnasium floors. It is a double action finish as it not only hardens the wood by penetration but forms a lough surface film that minimizes skidding, tracking, and burning by rubber-soled shoes. 5-W PASTE WOOD FILLER
A dependable material well adapted to the practical requirements: of '''filling*' pores and openings in open grain woods, such as oak, mahogany and walnut. It is BfLsy to wijxi and sand and provides a smooth surface for varnish, shellac or other finishes.

SHER-GIDE TRAFFIC MARKING PAINT
This product combines high visibility with long life, making possible effective guide line traffic control in practically all industrial and commercial situations. May be: applied on exterior or interior concrete, metal, wood or even asphalt pavement or floors without bleed

SELF-POL15HING WAX
A wax especially compounded for floors. It gives good anth-slip qualities and water resistance. It dries to a hard gloss without buffing. Self-Polishing Wax lias been Certified by the Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. as a satisfactory floor coating add finishing material for rub ber tile, linoleum, asphalt tile, varnished wood, cement and fcerrazzo.
REQUIREMENTS FOR METAL PROTECTION
Water and atmospheric fumes promote the corrosion which destroys iron and steel. The protective film, therefore, must be highly impervious to these elements and tenacious in maintaining a continuous film.
The priming coat must (1) Contain pigments which retard ur inhibit corrosion. (2) Be hard enough to resist abrasion and yet (3) elastic enough to accommodate the expansion and contraction, of metal.
The finish coat must protect the priming coat. The type of pair,! iand number of coats required depend upon the nature and the severity of the exposure.
KROMIK METAL PRIMER
An effective primer for iron and steel. It prevents rust through the inhibitive action of its pigment--a carefully balanced combination of zinc chromate, red lead, zinc oxide: and iron oxide.
Although Kromik Metal Primer is formulated a>: a Fimt Coat co be covered with finish coats of Metalast ic or Kern A & A, the protection afforded without recoat ing is equivalent to the best top coats--a great advan tage where steel must stand for long periods of time be fore! tihk field coat is applied. Vinyl-type jinishes, having good resistance to mineral acids and alkalis. Used over the proper primer. Tank Clad Enamel is tough and flexible, and has good exterior durability in the presence of many chemical fumes where temperature does not exceed 150CF. Tank Clad Primer is recommended for sandblasted steel only. Gripclad Primer should be used when steel is not sandblasted-- also on galvanized iron, aluminum, stainless steel and copper' Available in 5 colors, black and white.

KEM dATl COAT PRIMER AND ENAMEL
This enamel with its primer represent one of the most recent developments in protective coatings. Roth are catalyst cured, epoxy type compounds which can be built to a tough, very hard film of 1.0 to 1.5 mils. The resulting finish is highly resistant to most solvents, acids and alkalies and except for color changes will with stand temperatures up to 350F. Available in 5 triors, black and white.
Application--brush, spray or roller. Drying time--to touch, l hour and to recoat, spray 4 hours; brush and roller, 18 hours.

A pigmented slaindesigned to give uniform color and appearance (o new or weathered redwood and Western red cedar. When the pigmented stain has weathered away, a new coat of stain can be applied without further treatment of the surface. This is not the case with varnish tyj>e natural wood finishes which must be sanded off from time to time.

S-W WATER REPELLENT*

S-W PORCH & FLOOR ENAMEL
A tough, hard wearing, weather resistant coating for exterior and interior surfaces such as floors, porches, sLoirs, steps, etc. Suitable for use on wood, concrete and metal. Dries ready for use the day following application.
