The delay in returning Dr. Gautreaux's letter (enclosed) to you was due to the fact that the letter was sent to the Hazleton Laboratories address instead of my home. . At the time of my progress report (October 24, 1975) on the project we had completed the initial analyses of the data at the University of Cincinnati. I joined Hazleton Laboratories in Virginia last November and did not get back to the data until February, 1976 when I was preparing my pre sentation to the Society of Toxicology for the meeting in Atlanta. To my chagrin I discoverd the computerized files contained many errors and these errors would have to be corrected and all the analyses redone. Many of these errors trace back to the computerized data before I began the project-and some of the errors occurred during our own efforts. I began again to work on the project at Hazleton in May, 1976 and moved the project to an office in Reston, Virginia in June. Since then my'assistant, Mrs. Roseleen Allen and I, have had to spend an inordinate amount of time making the necessary corrections, setting up computer programs at the Litton Computer Center in Reston, redoing the analyses, and preparing computer tapes for data backup and for computer plotting by the Digital Graphics, Inc. in .Rockville, Maryland. Considerable amounts of time have been spent in reviewing the original data sheets. We have found, for instance, a number of special experiments such as "GE experiments" of LD, the "Corning experiments" of MOB, and the dietary manipulations' of MR, as well as many periods of vacations and other absences which effect the lengths of the experimental periods. Almost all of the computer analyses have now been completed and the computer plots should be completed by next week. We also had to calculate information concerning the concentrations and times of exposures in the chambers in order to obtain more accurate Ui rates of exposure. This involved extensive keypunching as well as programming. It has been a major concern to me to get this project completed as soon as humanly possible. I know this is also a concern of Ethyl. The project draws from a huge data base (21,000 days of measured exposure - 34 years of research) and N5369 Dr. Gary Ter Haar November 5, 1976 Page 2 I have not been able to discover any way to speed things along. Fortunately Bernie Sobel has worked closely with me on this project. He has been understanding of our data processing problems and has been very helpful in keeping the project moving. Among some of the things that have yet to be done are: 1. Completing and correcting the plots of the daily data 2. Retabulation of the data and comparison with the plots accounting when possible for abberent results 3. A detailed write up along the lines of the October, 1975 report 4. Hand plots of the effects (dose-response)to data, and other figures which then have to be drawn up by an artist for publication. " I hope this brief summary serves your needs. Best regards Stanley B. Ethyl would like you to complete this study and accordingly we are proposing that the subject ^agree ment which was funded by its own terms through September 24, 1976 be extended for a period of three months, i.e. from September 24, 1976 through December 23, 1976. During the period of this extension Ethyl will pay you a total of Four Thousand Dollars ($4,000) in three monthly installments of One Thousand Three Hundred Thirty-Three Dollars and Thirty-Three Cents ($1,333.33). The other terms of the subject agreement shall remain -unchanged during this three month extension.
