Re: Medical Surveillance for Asbestos Exposure
Recently there has been some confusion about the level of exposure to asbestos that justifies placing an employee on a medical surveillance program.
The current OSHA standard requires medical examinations for anyone with a measureable asbestos exposure. This means an-exposure to any airborne asbestos. This is consistent with the medical examination criteria specified in the Western Electric Occupational Health Examina tion Guide.
It is my understanding that.OSHA may soon issue a new asbestos standard, and the medical examination section is under consideration for revision. However, we must adhere to the requirements of the present standard __ _ until the new standard is adopted.
