(, 1) The Patent Department (Mr. Richard Plunkett) has evaluated the patent situation on CLP casts. Conclusions are as follows: the Solar Laboratories, who market the "Lightcast" material, have a broad patent (U.S. 3,421,501) assigned to Mr. Leroy Bcightol, one of their officers. This patent claims light or UV cured polym.er-impreqnated flexible fabrics for orthopedic use, thus covering the concept origi nated by Cerisa/Larsen at Grace. It appears probable that the Grace patent application will be rejected, and we will not be able to practice this invention without infringing.
Non-fabric type cast materials, such as our curable adhesive tape, woven tubes, etc., may not be subject to the infringement limitations. We are not sure whether we will be able to obtain- patent coverage of these concepts, but attempts to commercialize should probably be based on these materials, unless licensing possibilities could be considered.
(2) Mr. Rulon-Miller has not completed his market evaluation of product shelf-life requirements, but feels that it may be greater than
six months.
(3) In a meeting with B. Lundsager, C. Orgell and L. Burkholder, a product and process selection was made to permit the development of economics. This tentative concept consists of producing a perforated (50% openings) CLP sheet on a special cylinder. The polymer would probably be applied at elevated temperature, and solidify to a rubbery material at room temperature (it is a SLP, solid curable polymer). These sheets are then coated with the UV curable contact adhesive, cut
into bandages of the desired width, and packaged. A release coating treated plastic film will be used for producing rolls of materials, whicn will be sealed under an inert atmosphere in air tight foil pack ing. The Development Department is in the process of issuing the results of their economics study.
Conclusions
The patent situation is
concept, but restrictive for factors are expected soon.
not unfavorable for the adhesive tape
impregnated fabrics. Other decision

A-l REFORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF MONQ-KOTE (Project 2659)
Laboratory data developed at WRC on effects that certain additives have on bond strength of the standard Mono-Kote formulation (ex asbestos) were presented to CPD in a meeting of November 9th. Ten additives were selected for further study. Formulations containing these additives are scheduled for high temperature (>300C) deformation and flexural tests in December.
