(1) In connection with the Industrial Products Divisions, and as a result of discussions with Messrs. Gedettis, Stansfield, and Johnston, the following priorities were developed: cl*a Delth - It is/fel^ that this plant^isNfhe worst of'rn11 the cS Industrial Produces plants from^a dust^oint o^/viewXor.d the Ipntirg/plant snb^ld be surveyed. b Vermont^- Recent dust counts taken at this plant indicate TJ5ere" are certain areas where the dust count is extremely high. The St. Regis packers on the first floor^ the waste conveyor under the silos, the dry rock storage tunnel, and several other areas are extremely bad and need attention. If the threshold limit value of chrysotile asbestos dust is set at two million particles per cubic foot of air as is ptuooscd, then all except one np eighteen readings taken at this plant in July-1967 exceed the threshold limit. c. Ar.naool i s - The silica content of the stone at this plant is very high, therefore this location was listed next in line. However, dust counts were taken very recently but we do not, as yet, have a report of the readings. Pre liminary reports indicate that conditions are r.ot good. d. Fairmount - This entire plant should be surveyed. e. Chormian - This entire plant should be surveyed. f. Pound Brook - This entire plant should be surveyed. g. Kremlin - This entire plant should be surveyed. GAF 17452 .*uerttf TO Hr. J. George Piccoli New York rocM H. R. Mesler, Jr. LOCATION Bound Brook date December 17, 1968 cc (Po3e 2 of 3> SUBJECT: SAFETY - DUST CONTROL As a result of correspondence .received 'ton Mr. W. F. Armstrong, it appears that wool felt plants should be surveyed both for dust and noise, particularly in the picking, hardening,.and drying areas, in the following order: (o ) Glefivi 1 le (b) Newburah(c) Franklin (d) kies ter lv* (e) Staffordsville Besides the noise and dust conditions, other health problems exist which should be investigated. 1 believe these can be handled separately and although they are part of the over-all environmental health problem, they are not related to dust or noise. (2) - The problems in the Floor Tile Division were discussed with Mr. Walter Foote and he feels, inasmuch as conditions are relatively the same in all plants, that it is not necessary to set up a priority list. The Vails Gate plant has already been surveyed, and work is under way to correct the dust situation at this plant. In view of this, I feel that we do not need to consider Vails Gate at this time. The Banbury deck areas at Houston. Joliet, and Long Beach should be surveyed wneneve. it is convenient ui.u ilccl to do oo. V'o ho-'e sore information concerning the Houston plant, which is also indicative-of conditions at Joliet and Long Beach. (3) - I met with Messrs. Neil, Faneuf, and Hoeltzel for the purpose of determining the needs in the Building Products Division, and the following was developed: ~ " a. Those plants using fiber fluffers should be given first conin the following order J //> . .1 Mobile 2. Joljii. 3. Millis 4, Er ie .5. Minneapolis 6 Kansas City 7 . At the Mobile plunt, the beater, floor ana scrap grinding areas in the Asbestos Cement Department were considered as being the worst and should receive immediate attention. c. The areas on our Roofing Machines, between the coating drum and the cutter, should be surveyed in the following order: 1. Erie 2. So. Bound Brook 3. Baltimore 4. Denver 5. Millis 6. Dallas 7. Savannah 8. Mobile 9. Kansas City 10. Tampa 11. Minneapolis 12. Joliet There are other areas, such as the fiber fluffing and thesawing and trimming areas in the Cglsilite Department at Gloucester, the joint compound mixing area at Wheatland, and the Automotive Department at Joliet which should receive attention. Also, there are additional areas in our plants which are known to be hazardous to a lesser degree than those listed herein and it is suggested that whenever a plant is surveyed, the items listed herein be given priority but that all dusty areas be included. Further details regarding any of this information will be given upon request. H. R. Mesler, Jr. HRM:ab GAF 17454 *7 \.n I I^ V . I I "
