Stend to agree with Jim. The atmosphere at Region 7 seems a bit hostile towards folk who should be considered colleagues. Not implying any ill will on the part of ERA, and I don't want to do anything that would make the employees feel less than safe. However, could the security detail be given a procedure that is less intense towards those identified as friendlies? I know that would require an extra step by ERA staff, but it's a thought,

Last week I had the opportunity to visit EPA HQ and meet with some of the new AA's. Generally we met in the Administrators section of the building, in conference areas. We did have an escort during our meetings.
I was very surprised that the level of security to enter EPA HQ was not nearly as intense and the demeanor of the security detail was much more pleasant than what I experienced at Region 7 during the 4 states meeting.

At HQ I was not required to remove my belt or shoes. The briefcase/phone/computerscreening was effective and quick. We were escorted inside a preliminary waiting area next to the scanning area.
Not one of the ECOS staff or Officer team was put through the pat down and sock search, we all experienced at Region 7 for the four states/EPA meeting. I was dressed in a very similar manned at both locations.
At HQ we were invited inside the building in a warm area as we waited for our team to individually go through security. I see this as a very reasonable accommodation. The security team were friendly and communicated with us in a positive manner.
Let me suggest that our teammates and the Directors be treated with a similar security screening at Region 7. Think of it like a TSA precheck program.
Reflecting between the two experiences, I found the Region 7 experience very offensive. If I did not have an "negative attitude" prior to meeting with you, it is very likely I would develop one after this experience.
I think you can either modify the screening for your state partners or we should meet off site for future meetings. I doubt you have ever found a weapon on a state official or our staff. If you do find one - we will take appropriate administrative action.
