' Dear Dr.Kehoe, Attached hereto is correspondence regarding some complaints on leaded gasoline in Peru. It is my recollection that sometime ago we (or Dr. Machle and I) discussed.the possibility of complications where containers that had contained leaded gasoline are used for other purposes and especially for food stuffs, and your opinion was that the containers would be satisfactbry for such later uses provided that they were first cleaned with unleaded gasoline or kerosene. In the second paragraph of Mr. |3ennett,s letter to Coard, he states that cans are used by "local industries." It occurs to me that if these industries are few in number and account for the greater part of such use (which has as yet not been determined) that they could be informed of the true magnitude of any hazard and advised that proper cleaning will render the cans as satisfactory for such use as previously. Ihe individual average person who has used containers for other purposes will, I believe, continue to do so regardless of any warnings or special instructions he may receive and would, naturally, make some effort to clean the cans to get away from gasoline taste. Before discussing the various problems with Mr. Bennett, I should appreciate having your views and recommendations. I doubt if I shall be able to leave as soon as stated by Coard and, frankly see no great reason for it but I shall, of course, plan to stop in Lima and do what I can.
