The bulk and air samples you sent have been analyzed for asbestos. The bulk sample from the Westport Service Center, 55 West State Street, was analyzed by x-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. The major crystalline components of this sample, seen by x-ray diffraction, are chrysotile (serpentine asbestos) and calcite Ccalcium carbonate). This was confirmed by polarized light microscopy where many birefringent, asbestiform fibers were observed.
The air samples were analyzed for asbestos by counting all fibers greater than 5unt long seen by phase contrast microscopy at 40Ox using the methods recommended by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Based on your sampling data and the optical counts the results can be seen on Table I.
