Introduction
This descriptive catalogue is especially designed to assist maintenance engineers, building owners, managers, and others interested in the profit able upkeep of buildings and equipment with maintenance paints. It contains essential descriptive matter and color illustrations of the various (Hidden maintenance materials. It defines the Glidtlen Standardization Service, and explains briefly its practical application.
The list of Glidden Factories printed on pages 40 and 41 of this book represents a remarkable combination of technical knowledge, man power and mechanical equipment. The scientific training and practical experi ence of many men, representing four generations in the manufacture of paint, has been united under one progressive executive control. Every

mechanical improvement that modern engineering has developed is here used to further fortify this knowledge, and this personnel, in the production of high quality materials such as are described in this brief discussion of Maintenance.
Glidden laboratories, similar to the one illustrated, are constantly at work devising and perfecting new materials, improving production methods and checking finished stocks to insure uniformity to standards. Approximately one hundered and twenty-five technically trained men are required for this work. They are one of the many factors of safety behind the Glidden System of Standardized Maintenance wherein The Glidden Company, as the manufacturer, assumes the obligation of properly pro tecting that portion of the capital investment of industry represented by structures and equipment susceptible to depreciation. Under this sys tem every structural unit and individual piece of equipment must be properly protected, with a suitable material, on an established schedule, at an economical cost before The Glidden Company can consider its ob ligation fulfilled.

In the following pages the various maintenance materials that are manufactured by The Glidden Company for use in the industrial, com mercial and merchantile fields are illustrated and described. Without ex ception, evert' tnaterial described in this book has been subjected to the actual conditions for which it is intended. Each product has been pro duced or formulated to meet a specific condition, and, if properly applied, is guaranteed to satisfactorily perform the service for which it is recommended.
This little book, requiring but a few hours to print, necessitated five and one-half years of factory preparation, plant surveys, comparative analyses, development, elimination and final approval, before the ex ecutives of this company felt satisfied to let it go to press. You will find that it contains only concise, simple statements of fact without any evasive, misleading, or exaggerated information pertaining either to The Glidden Company, The Glidden System of Standardized Maintenance, or the vari ous finishing materials recommended for use in maintenance work.
The arrangement of the book is such that engineers, contractors, and owners specifying Glidden materials on new construction may be assured of securing the exact materials they desire used by merely inserting in their specifications the "Engineering Specification" paragraph which follows im mediately after the descriptive paragraph of each material. It is clearly identified in each instance by the sub heading "Engineering Specification," and each product has been further identified with a code number indicating the class of material and a name indicating the standard color.
To facilitate usage this Itooklet has been assembled in two general sections arranged in the following sequence:
Section one:--Building Exteriors and Structures Outdoor;--includes the painting and preserving of wood, the preservation of metal and the preservation of concrete, brick and stone. All of the materials described in this section are treated specifically as they apply to exterior surfaces. For practical purposes and to prevent repetition these materials have been classified in relation to the composition of the surface for which they are intended;--i.e. wood, metal, masonry;--rather than in relation to the kind of building upon which they may be used;--factory, department store, power house, etc.
Section two:--Building Interiors and Interior Equipment;--includes the painting of factory and mill interiors, mill village dwelling and club house interiors, commercial and merchantile interiors, and a brief summary of the more elaborate materials required for the interior decoration and enrichment of theatres, churches, auditoriums and executive offices. The materials described in this section are treated more in relation to color and appropriateness for the kind of building in which they will be used rather than in relation to the composition of the surface upon which they may be applied. For ready reference there has been provided at the back of this booklet an alphabetical index of Glidden Materials and a maintenance chart of structural units and equipment alphal>etically indexed to accurately designate the correct materials for every condition.

Maintenance Paints
(Building Exteriors and Structures Outdoor)
The first section of this manual covers the general subject of the preservation and upkeep of the exterior of Buildings. In addition to the favorable impression created by the good appearance of building exteriors that are properly maintained;--this section of the manual explains one of the greatest factors in successfully protecting the original value and utility of a plant.
Exterior Industrial Maintenance
I-rom the outside always come the most persistent, most destructive and most active agents ot deterioration. The sun, wind, rain, frost and various gases in the atmosphere tire a continual menace to the life of all types of structural exteriors above grade. The alkalis, acids and waters of the earth persistently strive to undermine the various typos of construction below grade.
All present day building materials will succumb to the perpetual at tacks of exterior agents. Sound, well seasoned wood will rot and turn to soft worthless pulp. Bright rigid steel will rust and turn to dull, spongy dust. Concrete, brick, even natural stone will disintegrate, crack, crumble and fall. Time and neglect arc the only rccpiisites for destruction. In telligent maintenance is the only requisite for preservation.

The Glidden Company has given years of time to the study of condi tions existing in all sections of this country and the tropical countries of Central and South America. It has been our business, our livelihood, and we have given it the same constant attention, and supervision that must be given to any successful enterprise, everything that we have learned in our association with Building Kxtcrior Maintenance has been incorporated to advantage in the formulation and development of the materials recom mended for exterior exposure in the first section of this manual.
Each product has been a problem of intense specialization, built upon experience and faithful study to produce the right product for the right purpose. In this first section there are listed only sixty materials, but they represent nearly eighty years of observation, experiment, and practical test in the development of the right wood paints for wood surfaces, steel paints for steel surfaces, and masonry (taints for masonry surfaces. The C.liddcn Company has never produced any product by guesswork.
Maintenance is the keystone of industry. Practically every material used in building construction or equipment will show progressive disinte gration unless given regular intelligent attention. ! )eeay works continually, silently and pcrsistcntlv. The Gliddcn System of Standardized Maintenance, through its thor ough application of basic (taint engineering principles to the specific prob lems of individual plant operation, renders a sensible and prolituhle serv ice to industry. It is a sound, practical method of continuous supervision based on definite standards of plant protection, sanitation and appearance. Its operation is briefly described in the following paragraphs.
A group of carefully trained technical service men. operate with the sales force under the direction of the Maintenance Engineering Department. These men make the original plant surveys that form the foundation upon which the standardization service is constructed. Their reports tire based on actual examination of the physical conditions existing in your plant and as such furnish our development laboratories with the specific information that is required for their constructive work.
Standards arc determined by elimination. Viz Small quantities of several materials are produced (by different men) in the formulating labor atories--all of which will meet in varying degree the specific condition known to exist in the plant for which that particular product is intended. After production they are collectively subjected to accelerated tests that closely approximate the actual plant conditions. This method of collective thought on the part of several individuals is the most positive method we have ever employed in arriving at reliable standards.
When standards have been produced that meet satisfactorily each condition known to exist in the plants for which they are intended, they are assembled in printed book form together with detailed specifications and control charts covering their propter application. These books insure protection, plant efficiency and fixed responsibility to the plant owner. They operate automatically and are absolutely dependable.

Painting and Preserving Wood
Painting of exterior wood todav is a radically different proposition from what it was twenty or twenty-iive years ago. 1 he rules w hich gov erned work of that period by no means apply to work o! today. Conditions hate changed and the successful maintenance engineer or mail in charge of maintenance is the man who understands present day requirements.

Those arc by no means all of the difficulties with which the paint man ufacturer ha- to contend but they are sufficient to illustrate the many obstacle.- with which he i.~ confronted in the production of -ati-laclorv materials. The lad that present day paints are giving longer wear and greater satisfaction than material- ti.-ed in the past is due to the energy anti ingenuity of the paint manufacturer rather than to anything that has been done in the production ol processing ot the lumber now in use.
Realizing tliat the method of application is just as important as the quality fit the material applied. The (Hidden Company has prepared an accurate description ot each ol the diltereut woods now in use. It is a con densed. illustrated, authentic record ot practical information relating to the different lumbers used for exterior building, and the proper treatment c.f each. It will gladly be supplied upon request.

Glidden Exterior Wood Paint
The basic formula used in Glidden Exterior Wood Paint is not merely a paint formula. It is a definite formula composed of covering pigments in definite proportions with durable oils, gums and volatile constituents, so mixed and amalgamated as to produce a continuously uniform product of known properties. Properties which have demonstrated their actual value in both laboratory and practical tests, A superior product can not be made in any other way.
This paint in white weighs seventeen and one-half pounds per gallon and is composed of Lead Carbonate, Lead Sulphate, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Oxide, and Silcx ground in pure Linseed Oil. In the bright colors this formula would be changed somewhat to permit securing the desired shade but basically all of the lighter tints conform closely to the white formula. This is the best prepared exterior wood paint we know how to make. One gallon covers approximately 600 square feet of surface, one coat. Detailed analysis furnished upon request. Put up in 55 and 30 gallon drums, 5, 1, l/i and gallon cans.
ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION (NEW WORK) 1st Coat; (Hidden Exterior Wood l'aint, (Insert rode number and name of color selected). To each gallon of paint add two quart* of Raw Linseed Oil and one pint of Turpentine. Apply this priming coat with a lull brush, well and evenly brushed out. Allow ample time lor thorough drying. Note. After priming coat is thoroughly dry, putty all nail holes, cracks and other defects with a first quality linseed oil and whiting putty.
2nd Coat: (Hidden Exterior Wood Paint. (Insert code mimber and name of color selected). To each gallon of paint add one pint of raw linseed oil anti onc-ltalf pint of tur pentine. Apply this intermediate coat with a medium full brush, well and evenly brushed out. Allow ample time for thorough drying.
3rd Coat: Glidden Exterior Wood Paint, (insert rode numlier and name of color
selected). Use material without reduction full body as received in tile original container. Apply tliis finish coat with a medium full brush, well and evenly brushed out.
Note. No thinning of paint materials should be permitted except as specified herein.
GENERAL DIRECTIONS
Carelessness in properly mixing paint invariably results in poor cover ing, non-uniform color and generally unsatisfactory results. Be sure that the contents of each package is thoroughly agitated from the bottom until the pigment is evenly incorporated throughout. Remove the entire head of the package, pour or dip off half the liquid, stir the balance of the paint with a flat paddle that will reach the edges of the container until all of the pigment is in suspension, then gradually pour back the liquid portion previously drawn off. Stir your paint frequently while painting.

Glidden Outside White (Semi-Paste)
This is the same outside white previously described under Glidden Exterior Wood Paints prepared in semi-paste form for those who prefer a semi-paste rather than a liquid ready to brush product. It is composed entirely of Lead Carbonate, Lead Sulphate, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Oxide and Silex ground in pure linseed oil with the proper percentage of dryer. One gallon of Glidden Outside White (Semi-paste) mixed with one gallon of Linseed Oil makes two gallons of finish coat paint ready for use. One gallon of semi-paste covers approximately 1200 square feet of surface one coat when properly reduced. Average weight per gallon twenty-seven pounds. Put up in 55 and 30 gallon drums, 5 and 1 gallon cans.
ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION (NEW WORK)
1st Coat: Glidik'ii Outside White fix-mi-TasrG. To each gallon of Semi-Taste add six quarts of pure linseed oil and one quart of turpentine. Apply this priming coat with a full brush, well and evenly brushed out. Allow ample lime for thorough drying.

Glidden Titanium Lead in Oil (Soft Paste)
Titanium Oxide, Zinc Oxide and Lead Carbonate are combined in this prodLtcl on the basis of 85% pigment and 15(7 pure Linseed Oil. This combination brings to the already known qualities of white lead in oil both the reinforcing hardness of Zinc Oxide anti the brilliant whiteness and opacity of Titanium. The soft paste will break up in one third the time required for ordinary paste and requires only airout one third the effort. In addition to the many advantages derived from the use of Titanium Lead in Oil on exterior surfaces it is also highly desirable for interior use due to its greater coverage, easier working qualities, greater whiteness, high hiding power and greater resistance to discoloration . I ram interior fumes. Put up in 100, 50, 25 and 12G pound kegs.
Glidden Lead-O-Zin (Paste)
In this product having a content of 66 2/3% Pure Basic Carbonate of Lead and 33 1/3% Pure Zinc Oxide, the softness of the white lead is reinforced by the hardness of the Zinc Oxide. The resulting blend when ground in 8%, Pure Linseed Oil produces a properly balanced com bination of White Lead, Zinc and Linseed Oil in paste form. The strength imparted to the White Lead by the Zinc Oxide provides a degree of hardness and resistance sufficient to compen sate for the characteristic soft texture of the white lead when used alone. The resulting film of paint is more durable, lias a longer life and greater resistance to weather without sacrificing the good qualities of the white lead base. Put up in 100, 50, 25 and 12>7 pound kegs.

Glidden Lead-O-Zin (Soft Paste)
This product is the same comhirmtion of 66 2/3% Pure Basic Carbonate of Lead and 33 1/3% I'ure Zinc Oxide ground in 15% fare Linseed Oil to produce a soft paste consistency. It contains all the desirable qualities of white lead and zinc paste plus the advantage of a higher oil content. The addition of sufficient oil to produce a soft paste consistency facilitates the handling of the product and insures proper incorporation of the final paint. The soft paste will break up in one third the time required for the ordi nary paste, and requires about one third the effort. It is economical and easv to use and will alwavs produce a completely incorporated, properly blended, finished paint. Being produced on the same basic cost as ordinary white lead and zinc paste there is no premium tor this easier working material. 1'ut up in 100, 30, 23 and 12% pound kegs.
Euston Pure White Lead in Oil (Paste)
The Huston controlled process of chemi cal lead corroding and carbonating is a defi nite improvement in the manufacture of Basic Carbonate of Lead. The control is so exact that there is no variation at any time in the quality, texture, color, or uniformity of the product. The chemical carbonation is complete, producing 100% Basic Carbonate of Lead. The mechanical filtration and dif fusion is constant producing a standard degree of fineness. The finished product consists of 92% Bure Basic Carbonate of Lead ground in 8% Bure Linseed Oil. The product is alwavs uniform, having an ex ceptionally tine texture, a pure white color, and excellent spreading and hiding properties. But up in 100, 50, 23 and 12% pound kegs.
Euston Pure White Lead in Oil (Soft Paste)
This product consists of 85% Bure Basic Carbonate of Lead ground in 15% Bure Linseed Oil. It has all the superior qualities of Euston White Lead plus the distinct advantage of a higher oil content. The addition of sufficient oil to produce a soft paste consistency facilitates the handling of the product and insures proper incorporation of the final paint. The soft paste will break up in one-third the time required for the ordinary paste, and requires about one-third the effort. It is economical and easy to use, and will always produce a completely incorporated, properly blended finished paint. Being produced on the same basic cost as ordinary white lead in oil paste there is no premium for this easier working material. Put up in 100, 50, 25 and 12% pound kegs.
No. 1911 Flatting Oil
This is the material referred to in the white lead mixing formulas on the following page. It is manufactured to l>e used with white lead in oil to produce fiat effects for interior walls and woodwork. The resulting finish is beautiful, long wearing and washable. Put up in 5, 1, % and % gallon cans.
Mixing Formulas for White Lead in Oil
The white lead mixing formulas given herewith are based upon the use of the heavy paste form of Euston lead. Wfjen using soft paste bear in mind that it contains approximately one gallon more of oil to each 100 pounds and consequently requires about one gallon less of oil in each of the following formulas.

This is an excellent product to loosen up hard working paints and varnish enamels. It is not a substitute for linseed oil. Recommended as a mixing liquid to toughen up finish coat exterior paints and enamels. Also used extensively to increase lustre in finish coats and as a waterproof ing wall size especially in new buildings where the plaster is not entirely dried out. Makes an excellent mixing liquid for flat wall paints to increase the hardness of finish coats and make them wash better. It is also excellent as a waterproof floor dressing, for .Concrete floors. No. 4100 Water Proof Wood Primer
This is an exceptionally fine exterior wood primer combining solid one coat coverage, neutral gray color, easy working, strong adhesion and positive waterproofing qualities never before obtained in an exterior prim ing material. It flows out readily, works and levels smoothly, stays up in the package, and dries hard overnight to a tough, hard, flat film that pro vides a beautiful priming base for the succeeding coats of paint. One gallon covers approximately 550 square feet of surface one coat. This material weighs sixteen and three-quarter pounds per gallon. Put up in 55 and 30 gallon drums, 5, 1, yi and }4 gallon cans. No. 4162 Exterior Spar Varnish
A long oil varnish composed of the toughest fossil gum resins in solution with elastic durable drying oils, combined at high temperatures to produce a liquid coating which will become a permanent solid film upon exposure to the air. Unaffected by moisture, gases, vapors, or other atmospheric agencies of decomposition or decay.
Extremely resistant to abrasion, tough, elastic, durable, waterproof, with a good gloss and free (low, No. 4162 Exterior Spar \ arnish is today the same uniform deitendable product that it has always been during three quarters of a century of consistent service. It is a superior product which will not turn white or discolor in any way from any cause whatever.
Xo. 4162 Exterior Spar Varnish is pale in color, has extreme elasticity, excellent Itody and flowing properties. Sets dust free in four to five hours and dries hard in sixteen to twenty hours, according to conditions. Can be rubbed to a dull finish two days after application. For use upon all exterior wood surfaces such as outside doors, window sills, casings, etc., in (act, all surfaces exposed to the elements. It will be found that this is a very excellent quality varnish for the price and is recommended for use oit exterior wood surfaces where the highest quality is not necessary. 1st Varnish Coat: Clidden No. 4162 Exterior Spar Varnish. To each gallon of \ arnish add one half pint of turpentine. Work this first varnish coat thoroughly. Allow forty-eight hours to dry then finish with pumice stone and water properly rubbed down with hair cloth.
2nd Varnish Coat: Clidden No. 4162 Exterior Spar Varnish. Use varnish without reduction full hotly as received in tlie original container. Flow this finish varnish coat on the work in a careful and workmanlike manner. Allow ample time for thorough drying.
Note: If a dull finish is tlesired. Allow'finish coat a minimum of forty-eight hours to dry, then rub with pumice-stone and oil or pumice-stone and water. Used brushes are preferable to new brushes, lieur-linir or badger-hair brushes art! preferable for var nish application. Varnish brushes used frequently should be kept in varnish and when kept for a long (k t u m) of time without using tile brush should be washed out in turpentine anil then the bristles kept completely covered with linseed oil. before using in Varnish again the oil should lie most thoroughly washed out by several washings with turpentine.

Glidden Store Front Enamels
Few users of this class of material appreciate the difficult problem pre sented to the paint manufacturer in developing suitable products contain ing all of the desirable qualities necessary for satisfactory work. The deliberate, scrupulous treatment of store fronts twenty years ago set a high standard of appearance which possessed a beauty, durability, and color permanency that present day owners continuously desire to reproduce.
They forget that in the past there was ample time for long oil primers, and load goat snrfacers carefully puttied and sanded smooth. Flat coats of ground color were applied and rubbed by ha ml with tine steel wool. Solid coats of japan color followed the ground color and over them a coat of color varnish was applied and rubbed down with curled hair. The final finish was usually a coat of elastic exterior spar t arnish.
The paint manufacturer today is expected to duplicate the gloss, lustre, depth and fullness of the old style built up finish in a one coat enamel that will dry overnight, and it is creditable to note that represen tative manufacturers through their ingenuity and technical research have succeeded in the accomplishment of this task to a remarkable degree.
Glidden Store Front Knamels represent eleven tears continuous developmcnt. The richness of color and fullness of both' which they posj-ess is obtainable only through the long and costly treatment of the oils and varnishes used in their manufacture. The pigments used in each indiviriual color are the finest, most permanent pigments it is possible to produce or obtain. This is a Ixxly enamel for finish coat work. Glidden Amusement Park Paints
A very large proportion of the Amusement Park Paints sold in this country are ol the job lot distribution type made from anything and every thing. They are sold very largely on price by all kinds and classes of paint brokers who in the main are not paint manufacturers and know little or nothing about even the physical requirements of n desirable and satis factory .painting material. Until recently only a very lew of the recognized established paint companies have given any consideration to the peculiar requirements of the amusement park, or the formulation of products that would render adequate service under such conditions. The Glidden Company was one of the first to develop suitable materials for this work.
Between seventy-five and ninety percent of the painted surfaces in any amusement park are of wood construction. The woods used are largely of til e coarse grained types, most of which are crooked, apt to warp and splinter, with a very poor and uneven absorption that takes good judg ment, experience and hard work on the part of the painter to obtain a dependable and satisfactory job. Further, in this particular field, to properly preserve the structure is not enough. There must be in addition to protection ol the surface, the publicity value of good appearance which .till attract and please the public. A good amusement park paint must do four things in one operation. It must properly satisfy the uneven oil absorption of coarse grained wood like a lead primer. It must harden down firmly to a durable waterproof film like an oil paint. It must have a high gloss and permanent color like a varnish enamel, and ic must surface dry quickly to minimize personal property damage and annoyance to the public.
Glidden Amusement Park Paints are a combination of permanent non fading pigments ground in a long oil synthetic gum varnish. The oil content is partially pro-oxidized before incorporation with the varnish to provide an overnight surface dry and yet retain in the paint sufficient slow oxidizing oil to satisfactorily seal the wood and harden down lightly to a durable waterproof him. The synthetic gum used in producing the varnish pro vides the permanent high enamel gloss characteristic of these paints and blends perfectly with the oil content to produce free flowing materials that are easy to apply. The pigments used are chosen particularly for their known permanency to light and sufficient pigment is used in all colors to insure solid coverage and strong hiding power. Glidden Japan and Liquid Dryers
Xo. 4132 Pate White Dryer is an excellent dryer, pale in color, manu'acturccl from carefully selected materials. It is intended for drying white enamels and mixes readily with both linseed and varnish oils. It is used very largely as a dryer for white and the lighter shades of paint. Four or five gallons is sufficient to dry a barrel of raw linseed oil.
Xo. 4133 Reliable Dryer is an excellent and dependable dryer in every way. It is made from hard gums and possesses strong drying properties. Two and one-half gallons of dryer is sufficient to dry a barrel of raw linseed oil. It is intended especially for drying linseed oil paints.
Xo. 4134 Kconomy Dryer is an economical dryer intended especially for use in exterior paints. It is made from hard gums, is dark in color, and strong in drying properties. A thoroughly reliable and satisfactory dryer in every way. Two and one-half gallons of dryer is enough to dry fifty gallons of raw linseed oil. No. 1900 Paint and Varnish Remover
This material instantly removes paint, shellac and similar coatings from all surfaces, leaving them clean and ready for refinishing. It does not contain alkali, acid, oil or water. It will not injure or raise the grain of the finest veneer. It will not injure the hair of the finest brush. It is free from objectionable odor and will not injure the skin. Put up in 5. 1, Jj and 4 gallon cans.
No. 1902 White and No. 1903 Orange Shellac
Both of these materials are lour pound cut shellacs of the finest quality. Recommended for use wherever a pure white or orange shellac finish is recpiired. Put up in 5 gallon cans. 1, , *4 and ,!s gallon glass jars.
Glidden Oxide Wood Paints
The nation wide use of oxide wood paints as a finish for railway freight cars is sufficient evidence of the durability and economy of this type of material. In addition to the railways, there are many other places wherein products of this kind can be used to advantage. The pulp and paper in dustry use oxide paints on exterior log conveyors and stackers. The oil producer uses oxide paint on the well derrick and shed. The coal mine uses oxide paint on the tipples and trestle work. The natural gas industry uses oxide paint on the exterior of pump houses and overhead pipe supports. The telephone and telegraph companies use oxide paint on cross arms and reels. 4 hese are just a few examples of the many places where oxide wood paints are rendering satisfactory and economical service. Glidden Oxide Wood Faints are made front sesqui oxide of iron to comply with U.S, Government Specifications. They arc supplied in both light and dark shades using bright red and dark red oxides of iron. They are ground in a combination of linseed and china wood oils and are extremely water proof, durable, and weather resistant. Preservation of Metal
Among all of the various materials used in modern industrial struc tures, i-on and its kindred products, have the widest usage and the greatest depreciation. From the "nig" up through practically every stage of refine ment, iron displays p ogressive disintegration upon exposure to the air. It has in all forms an almost resistless tendency to reunite with oxygen.
The disintegration of Iron, once started, is very rapid and exceedingly difficult to stop. No other building material will undergo such complete chemical decomposition in so short a time. Here, more than in any other maintenance condition, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. Regular intelligent attention is positively essential for successful preservation.
Coal Mln Exterior Maintenance
The permanent preservation of metal has always been, and for that matter still is, the greatest problem in maintenance. Regardless of what form the protective coating may take, tip to the present time, no coating has been found that will give satisfactory protection over any appreciable length of time unless carefully and consistently maintained.
In choosing a suitable protective coating for metal, look first at the inhibitive qualities of its pigment content. Choose paints containing pig-

merits that act as prevcntatives of corrosion. Chromic Compounds, Basic Pigments, neutral oxides, and inerts that either prevent corrosion or at least do not excite it. Particularly do not use paints containing pigments that will stimulate corrosion.
Positive imperviousness to air and moisture is essential. The paint vehicle must be extremely water resistant and must contain no water. The paint must be dense and when dry must have a non porous surface that is unaffected by atmospheric conditions. The film must be tough to resist abrasion. The pigment must be finely ground and have an affinity for the vehicle. It must be tenacious and elastic that it may procure a good bond and not crack open.
On the following pages arc listed the various metal coatings manu factured by The Glidden Company with complete descriptions of each. They are offered, not as perfect protective materials, but rather as honest materials, honestly described. They represent more than three quarters of a century of painstaking effort and continuous development in the field of metal protective paints.
Directions for Cleaning Metal
The greatest cause of unsatisfactory protection is faulty application. Metal protective coatings as a class are heavy materials, hard to apply. This fact may contribute somewhat to the tendency so often exhibited by unskilled labor to skimp on the actual physical exertion required to properly apply this type of product. Certain, it is, that slipshod, inefficient appli cation of protective paints, represents the greatest problem affecting the successful preservation of metal construction.
The proper preparation of a metal surface for painting is also an im portant factor in the resultant life of any protective coating. Moisture on the surface will cause the paint to blister and peel. Thick coats of paint will pucker, and quickly perish. Fast application where intermediate or finishing coats are applied over first coats not thoroughly dry is never satisfactory. Usually such work results in the secondary coats failing to properly adhere to the priming coats. Partial incorporation of pigment with vehicle before application causes uneven coats that will not dry uni formly. Application of old paints containing skins causes breaks and thin spots in the film.
With specific reference to Iron and Steel. Paint must not be applied on a surface where corrosion has secured a foot hold without first removing all the rust that can be possibly removed.
Sand blast, hammers, chippers, wire brushes and coarse sandpaper are all used in the removal of rust. Sand blast is the most thorough and satisfactory of all methods and should be used in every instance where the cost is not prohibitive. After the surface is brushed clean it should be wiped off with benzine before paint is applied.
The time required to properly prepare the surface is never an expense.

Glidden Chromatized Exterior Metal Paint
Chromic Compounds possess the peculiar ability of reacting chemically with Meel and creating a passive condition itt the metal that retards its normal tendency toward corrosion. Thev are excellent inhibitors of rust. In the Atlantic City tests conducted by the American Society for Testing Materials from Idl'd to 1914. Music Lead Chromate (American Vermilion I \va> awarded the highest ratittg as a rust preventative.
(Hidden Chromatized Kxterior Metal Paint is a combination of cover ing pigments and inerts carrying in each color a generous proportion of chromic compounds together with the necessary basic pigment and neutral inert required for positive protection. The chromic compounds (zinc chromate, normal lead chromate and basic lead chromate) insure adequate protection against corrosion. The supplementary pigments insure close adhesion, solid coverage, and easy application. The neutral inerts insure proper suspension of the pigments in the vehicle and prevent settling and hardening in the package.
The vehicle in which these pigments tire incorporated is a mixture of treated oils, gams and volatile constituents having a definite affinity tor the pigment comem. This affinity is essential to procure the degree ol cohesion that will unite the various pigments and inerts into one uniform dense mass. The oils ami gums used ill the vehicle are carefully selected and combined at high temperatures to insure the necessary tenacity, elasticity and toughness required to produce an impervious film.
(Hidden Chromatized Kxterior Metal I'ainis are quality products rep resentative of the finest protective paints manufactured for the mainte nance of exterior metal construction. Glidden Pure Red Lead in Oil (Paste)
A pure red lead paste composed entirely of oxides of lead free from all adulterants. The pigment content representing approximately ninetytwo per cent of the whole is composed of true amorphous red lead (Pb3 O4) and lead monoxide (PbO). It is highly oxidized, has exceptional fineness, and covers better than ordinary grades. The liquid content representing approximately eight per cent of the whole is composed entirely of pure linseed oil.
Glidden Pure Red Lead in Oil is a superior product of uniform con sistency that stays soft and workable at all times. It is easy and clean to handle, and incorporates all of the recognized advantages that have made red lead the most extensively used metal preservative coating on the market today. When reduced with two pints of boiled linseed oil and three pints of raw linseed oil to twenty-five pounds of Red Lead Paste the resultant gallon of paint will cover approximately one and threequarter tons of steel or 600 square feet of surface one coat. Glidden Anti-Corrosive Paint
(Hidden Anti-Corrosive Paints are made in approximately the same colors as Glidden Chromatized Exterior Metal Paints, but are made to sell at a lower [trice. They are composed of basic pigments, neutral oxides and inerts but do not contain any of the chromic compounds used in the more expensive materials. They will be found to have very excellent quality and make a very suitable product for cither exterior or interior metal work where the highest quality paint is not necessary.
While not as strong inhibitors of corrosion as the chromic compound paints, they insure adequate protection wherever they can be brought into intimate contact with clean bare metal. They are elastic and tougU, have close adhesion, solid coverage anti are easy to apply. They resist abrasion, arc not easily affected by change in atmospheric conditions and have no appreciable shrinkage upon drying One gallon covers approximately 500 square feet of surface one coat. When the tr,m>i>arcnt primer is dry apply mu' coat oi pigmented coating in whatever rolor is desired. Apply the pigmented material in the same manner that you would apply an ordinary paint. Hrush it out well and allow forty-eight hours to dry. If solid cover age is not obtained with one color coat, a second coat can be applied in the same manner as the first.
When dry follow with a full (lowing finish coat of the transparent coating No. 5127. Flow it on like a varnish and work it thoroughly. L'se all materials full body for brush ing. Kedurc all materials with No. 5128 Acidcoat Reducer to the proper consistency for spraying. These coatings must be applied on dry surfaces in dry weather to give satislaciory service. Renew the finish coat of Transparent Coating every year. This is not a nitro cellulose product and presents no greater fire hazard than that of ordinary paint.

Aluminum Acidproof Coating
To each gallon of f'.lklden Acidproof Coating--Transparent Xo. 5127 add two pounds Xo. 14<> incsli l'aiiu and Varnish Makers Aluminum bronze l'owder to obtain a suitable Aluminum Acidproot Coating of good brushing consistency. Where application is to be made by sprat- it is only necessary to add one and one-half pounds ol bronze Powder to the gallon of Transparent Coating. Agitate thoroughly before and timing application. This aluminum coat replaces the pigmented coat in the Engineering Specilication. It should lie preceded and followed by a coat of the Transparent Xo. 5127 in exactly the same manner as previously specified for pigmented materials.
No. 5115 Zinc Galvanized Iron Primer
The oily surface of galvanized iron presents a very unsatisfactory fouiulation for protective paints. Weathering by exposure, etching with acid, and even sand blasting have been resorted to in attempting to over come this characteristic of all galvanized materials. The oil is not nterely a deposit on the surface, it is an essential reaction of the galvanizing pro cess in the metal.
Weathering by exposure is rarely satisfactory due to the fact that joints, laps, nail holes and other parts where surfaces are in contact will invariably corrode before the center sheets have weathered. The galvan ized sheets are thin mid the disintegration is rapid. Quite olteu corrosion has progressed so lar at these points that the protective coaling has little or no value. It is always wise to paint galvanized metal promptly when new.
Etching a galvanized surface with dilute acid produces a chemical reaction in the galvanizing that apparently saponifies the oily constituents. The resultant surface has no greasy feel, is roughened up and takes it priming coat readily. For several years this practice of etching with acid has been widely promoted as a satisfactory treatment of galvanized sur faces. Don't be misled. The same acid that etches the surface is still in the metal and can still react with the paint to cause disintegration and slitri rttst. Etching a galvanized surface with acid is a sure way to destroy the protective paint coat that is applied over it.
(ilidden Zinc f.alvauizcd Iron Primer is made with Zinc Dust, which is combined with other covering pigments in a synthetic oil and gum vehicle like any ordinary paint. It involves no secret theories on the treatment of galvanized surfaces nor is it dependent on either weathering or etching lor satisfactory application. It simply represents a sound, practical utilization of like metallic elements. The only requirement for its successful application is a clean surface. One gallon covers approxi mately .s()(l square feet of surface one coat and dries down hard in six to eight hours. Put up in 55 and 30 gallon drums. 5 and 1 gallon cans.

No. 5117 EXTERIOR ALUMINUM MIXING VARNISH While not as long in oil and elastic as No. 5116 this material is a very durable mixing varnish and is preferred by many large users because it dries hard to touch overnight. On large areas such as 55,000 and 88,000 barrel oil storage tanks this material does not have sufficient "stretch" to compensate for the great expansion and contraction of such a large surface but for all ordinary purposes this mixing varnish will be found entirely satisfactory. No. 5118 HIGH HEAT ALUMINUM MIXING VARNISH The Aluminum Company of America laboratories at New Kensington, Pennsylvania have made the following examination and report covering this product. "A black iron panel was coated with this paint and placed in an elec tric furnace at 500 Centigrade (932 Fahrenheit) for a period of eight hours, at the end of which time the coating had a good appearance and showed satisfactory adherence to the metal upon bending the panel. We believe, therefore, that this vehicle would be satisfactory for use in alumi num paint applied to hot surfaces, and therefore recommend it for that purpose." No. 5119 READY MIXED ALUMINUM. PAINT A ready mixed aluminum paint composed of two pounds No. 140 mesh aluminum bronze powder in a neutral mixing varnish that does not discolor the bronze nor prevent it leafing properly. While the film ob tained with this material is not as brilliant as can be secured by mixing the bronze with the liquid at the time of application, it has the same dur ability, long life and good appearance as can be obtained in any ready mixed product except Metallite. Glidden Causticproof Coatings
This material is a precise combination of the necessary basic pigments, oxides and inerts required for satisfactory coverage and protection in a chemical vehicle containing in solution a synthetic resinous derivative of |jetroleum. It contains no asphaltum, tar, or gilsonite whatever, and has the working characteristics of ordinary oil paint except that it must be reduced only with mineral spirits when applied by spray.
Glidden Causticproof Coating has been subjected repeatedly to sat urated solutions of soda ash and caustic soda solutions of varying strengths in both hot and cold water without evidencing any serious deterioration whatever over short periods of time. It will not withstand lye, nor pro tracted immersion in a saturated solution of boiling caustic.
It is particularly valuable as a metal protective coating on both ex terior and interior construction of kettle houses, soda ash plants, storage tanks subjected to soda ash dusting, lye evaporators, lye treatment build ings, alkali plants, chemical plants and soap factories where metal surfaces are exposed to moist caustic fumes and dilute caustic liquids.
The application of this material requires no special equipment or ex pensive preparation. It is readily applied over either bare metal or old paint. It does not contain any strong paint solvents and will not lift an old paint film. It is prepared in white, black and six colors as illustrated. One gallon will cover approximately 480 square feet of surface one coat and will dry hard overnight. Put up in 55 and 30 gallon drums, 5 and 1 gallon cans.

Liquid Emulsified Asphalt Coatings
A water emulsion of Mineral Asphalt, Covering Pigments and Vegetable Oils in a ready to brush consistency for use wherever a pure asphalt coat ing is required. A superior product that will render satisfactory service over a longer period of time than cither the hot or cut-back type of asphalt coatings. A durable, waterproof, acid, alkali and brine resistant material that has remarkable adhesive qualities, solid coverage and long life.
Cut-backs, produced by dissolving asphalt in a solvent oil are compara tively short lived because the volatile oil in dissolving the asphalt combines with the natural oils of the asphalt. After application, these natural oils of the asphalt gradually evaporate off with the solvent oil. or vehicle, so that the coating eventually becomes hard; checks, cracks and peels. The asphalt has been broken down and only the solid lifeless constituents remain on the surface.
Hot coatings, produced by melting solid or semi-solid asphalts to a liquid state and applying them while hot, are only slightly more satisfactory than cut-backs. When asphalt is heated to the melting point, heavy black fumes constantly pass off into the atmosphere, leaving a solid deposit in the bottom of the kettle. These heavy black fumes are the natural essential oils of the asphalt and the black deposit at the bottom of the kettle is Bitumen. The heat required for melting has broken down the asphalt and after the hot asphalt has been applied even though it sets to an apparently solid film, it no longer possesses its original durable qualities.
Glidden Emulsified Asphalt Coatings are cold process water emulsions produced without the use of heat or solvent oils. The natual durability and long life of the pure asphalt is not only entirely preserved but is further fortified by the addition of durable oils and basic pigments. Adheres equally well on either a wet or dry surface. Dries to touch in four to six hours depending on thickness of coating. One gallon covers approximately 80 square feet of surface one coat. Glidden Asphalt Oil Coatings
These are high melt point asphalts cooked with vegetable oils to pro duce elastic gloss black and colored asphalt paints. They are supplied in the same colors previously illustrated under Glidden Emulsified Asphalt Coatings on page 39. Certain industries, particularly packing houses, paper mills, soap plants, glycerine manufacturers and chemical plants find a great variety of conditions that require the acid and alkali resistance possessed by asphalt oil coatings such as these. Manufactured in Red (No. 5144)--Green (No. 5145)--Gray (No. 5146)--and Black (No. 5147). Put up in 55 and 30 gallon drums, 5 and 1 gallon cans.
No. 5155 "Tartar" Liquid Black
As the name implies this is a coal tar pitch liquid black manufactured in ready to brush consistency for use wherever a coal tar product is desired. Dries hard in six to eight hours with firm adhesion and a tough film. Put up in 55 and 30 gallon drums, 5 and 1 gallon cans.
Glidden Asbestos Roof Coatings
These coatings manufactured in both plastic and liquid consistency are a combination of long fibre asbestos, asphalt and heavy waterproofing oils. They are dependable materials for repairing or recoating built up felt and other types of flat and semi-flat roofs. They will not run or sag when exposed to the hot sun, preserves the roofing felt, prevents rot, fills up pin holes and completely seals all leaks with a durable waterproof film. Made only in Black--Liquid (No. 613)--and Plastic (No. 612).
Glidden Exterior Graphite Paints
While in recent years the rust inhibitive claims formerly made for this type of material have been definitely proven false, there still remains some few users for such a product.- In recognition of this fact these five graphite paints are offered as good paints of that class. No. 5149 Suboxide Transformer Enamel and No. 5148 Suboxide Trans former Primer are made from basic lead chromate and suboxide of lead, often called blue lead, which is one of the highest rated rust inhibitive pig ments available for the manufacture of paint. At the Atlantic City Tests conducted by Sub-Committee IV, of Committee D-l of the American Society for Testing Materials during the years 1910 to 1914 inclusive, only one other pigment (Basic Lead Chromate) was given a higher rating than blue lead as a rust inhibitor. Roth the Primer and Enamel are dark gunmetal gray in color at the time of application and do not change in any way after exposure. One gallon of the primer covers approximately 450 square feet of surface one coat, the enamel approximately 475 square feet. Preservation of Concrete, Brick and Stone
All concrete, cement, brick and natural stones are ixtrous. All are more or less permeable and absorbent. Their porous composition permits the flow of liquids through the intricate honeycombing structure of the mass. Their characteristic absorption will readily assist the entrance of such liquids through the medium of capillary attraction. Contrary to popular belief, these so called permanent materials of the earth are not permanent, and unless they are properly protected they will inevitably be destroyed.
Grain Elevator Exterior Maintenance
Among all of the many factors of erosion that constantly menace the strength, durability and life of such structures, water is by far the greatest factor. It is always present, readily absorbed and continuously in motion. It is the universal solvent. It is a solid, a liquid and a vapor and in one form or another it will attack and destroy - 'mau.'al if given sufficient time. The successful preservation of concrete and kindred materials is more dependent oil protection against water than all other factors combined.
When you consider that water increases ten per cent in volume upon freezing; and that in so doing it will, if confined, exert a pressure in excess of 10000 pounds to the square inch; and that, in a temperate climate such as ours, this pressure is exerted many times in the course of each year; it is not hard to understand why water represents the greatest physical factor in the disintegration of a porous concrete surface. Add to tjiis'the ability to resume a liquid form, to act ds a carrying medium bringing the acids and alkalis of the earth to supplement chemically the sub surface pressure, and the further ability to produce through electrolytic action the corrosion and eventual disintegration of reinforcing metal and you can

readily understand why water not only represents the greatest physical factor but the greatest chemical factor as well.
It is this complete understanding of the true proportions of water in relation to the destruction of such surfaces that enables the reputable paint manufacturer to produce useful products with which to protect this type of construction. Of the four successful methods of waterproofing i.e. Surface Coating, Membrane, Mastic and Integral, three are dependent on the paint manufacturer for their success.
The products of The Glidden Company, described in detail on the following pages represent an experience of more than seventy-five years, covering the climatic and geographic conditions of every country on the continents of North and South America.
DIRECTIONS FOR PAINTING CEMENT Cement, in the process of setting produces a certain amount of calcium hydroxide, free lime in a hydrated condition. Calcium hydroxide, being a strong alkali, will immediately saponify the vegetable oils of a paint coating into soap. The first rain washes off the soap and leaves only the dry dead pigment of the paint clinging loosely to the surface. The loose pigment completely perishes in a short time and the work must be done over. Here, in a few brief sentences you have the concise history of countless unsatis factory attempts to paint a cement surface.
Neutralize free lime in new cement by washing the surfaces to be painted with a solution composed of three pounds Sulphate of Zinc dissolved in one gallon of water. Use either a brusli or spray and apply a lil>eral coat. Allow surfaces so treated ample lime for thorough drying before commencing to paint. This wash coat of Zinc Sulphate combines with the Calcium Oxide to form Zinc Oxide and Calcium Sulphate neither of which are caustic in nature or harmful to paint.
Cement, because of its structure and method of manufacture is porous, permeable and absorbent. A new cement surface that has been thoroughly neutralized by a liberal Zinc Sulphate wash still possesses sufficient suction to completely rob a paint coating of all its oil in a very short time, again leaving nothing but dry dead pigment on the surface to quickly perish and powder off.
Seal new cement in addition to neutralizing it. Use a lightly pigmented sealer that has a suitable filler to assist the oils in overcoming the natural porosity of the surface. Be sure the oils are thin enough to insure proper penetration and absolutely waterproof. Use sealing materials, of reputable manufacture, designed exclusively for the purpose of sealing. They will always give more satisfactory results than can be obtained from reducing ordinary paints with linseed oil or mineral spirits to a thin consistency.
When cement has been properly neutralized and properly sealed, it can be painted in the same manner as a wood or metal surface except that care should be taken to positively require that all paints used for painting cement be absolutely waterproof.

Glidden Waterproof Exterior Masonry Paint
This product is strictly a masonry paint, recommended for damp proofing and rendering uniform the color of exterior concrete, cement, stucco, stone, brick and unglazed tile. It resembles ordinary paints in general working qualities and physical characteristics but should not be confused with them as it is chemically an entirely different type of product. It is formulated specifically for use as a masonry finish and should be used as such.
Glidden Waterproof Exterior Masonry Paint is basically a combination pigment paint containing covering pigment, tinting color and inert ground in a waterproof china wood oil mixing varnish. It combines carefully selected solid covering pigments with the most waterproof film it is possi ble to produce without resorting to the use of by-product mineral oils that would discolor and stain the surface.
The china wood oil mixing varnish which comprises one hundred pier cent of the vehicle used in this product is treated to secure proper pene tration, high resistance to lime and low gloss. It dries with an egg shell finish that dulls down in approximately sixty days to a cement or stone texture, having more the appearance of a cleaned surface than one that has been painted. It penetrates well into the porous masonry and expands slightly upon drying, in this manner sealing the surface and securing firm adhesion. One gallon covers approximately 250 square feet of surface one coat. Average weight fifteen piounds per gallon. Put up in 55 and 30 gallon drums, 5 and 1 gallon cans. DIRECTIONS
Carelessness in properly mixing your paint invariably results in poor covering, nonuniform color, and generally unsatisfactory results. Be sure that the contents of each package is thoroughly agitated front the bottom until the pigment is evenly incorporated throughout. Remove the entire head of the package, pour or dip off half the liquid, stir the balance of the paint with a flat paddle that will reach the edges of the container until all the pigment is in suspension, then gradually pour back the liquid [tortion previously drawn off. Stir your paint frequently while painting.

No. 6109 Exterior Masonry Primer
A lightly pigmented sealing material in which covering pigments are combined with waterproof oils and gums. It is intended for the proper sealing of concrete, cement, brick, stone, stucco and unglazed tile, after the free lime has been neutralized. It is constructed specifically for sealing masonry and is not intended for use as a neutralizing agent and should not be used for this purpose.
The pigment content is ground exceptionally fine and acts as a rein forcing filler to supplement the sealing action of the vehicle. The oils and gums contained in the liquid are the most waterproof materials it is possi ble to produce or obtain. Upon drying there is a slight expansion which acts as an anchor in the pores of the masonry surface, thereby insuring thorough sealing and close adhesion. Under normal conditions it will dry satisfactorily over night producing a tough even film that thoroughly seals the surface and serves as a suitable ground coat for the masonry paint that is later applied. It is designed for use as a reducing material in conjunction with Glidden Waterproof Exterior Masonry Paint, and should be used as specified to procure satisfactory adhesion of first coats and to obtain the correct reductions necessary for spray application. It should be clearly understood that this reducer is intended specifically for use in conjunction with Masonry Paints on Masonry surfaces. No. 6108 Transparent Masonry Coating
A light colored transparent liquid coating that will render adequate protection, prevent efflorescence and staining, and thoroughly waterproof the porous exterior surfaces of all types of masonry. This material con sists of treated oils and gums permanently combined at high temperatures to produce a clear penetrating, waterproof coating that will dry hard over night and leave no unsightly stain or film on the surface treated. It should not be confused with No. 6107 Exterior Masonry Paint Reducer as there is nothing in common between the two materials other than that they are both transparent. Neither can be used to successfully replace the other, nor can either one be used for both pur|>oses. This material is intended only to properly waterproof and prevent discoloration of bare masonry. This material is essentially a light viscosity, penetrating, liquid wax product intended for waterproofing and polishing cut stone inlays of marble, granite, tile, brick and the ornamental exterior cement work often encountered in public auditoriums, government buildings, theatres, de partment stores and office buildings. It is absolutely colorless when applied to the work .and is a very dependable waterproofing liquid that is easy to apply full body either by brush or spray. It dries quickly, penetrates evenly and enhances as well as protects the beauty of the structure. Care should lx) taken to see that all moisture is out of the masonry before this colorless waterproofing liquid is applied. Put up in 5, 1, A and 'A gallon cans.

An opaque fluid designed for sealing under Glidden Wet Masonry Paints on wet or dry masonry surfaces that have been properly neutralized or naturally cured. Can be applied either to a wet or dry surface but can not be used successfully on a surface that is still "green". For this reason it is only recommended on masonry surfaces that have leen properly neutralized or surfaces that have lteen aged and naturally cured. Glidden Wet Masonry Paints
The problem of painting a wet masonry surface has long been a source of controversy and experiment. Cement washcoats, cement powder coat ings, cold water paints, casein calcimines and the so called hydraulic paints have all been recommended and discarded as unsatisfactory. Yet the need for a suitable wet masonry paint still is evidenced on every hand. Swim ming pools in amusement parks, retaining walls of reservoirs, concrete bridge abutments, dams, pumping stations, filtration plants and many other structures need and would use an attiactive paint coating to uniform their wet mas<5nry if one could be found that would render satisfactory service for a reasonable period of time.
For this class of industrial structures we introduce and recommend the Glidden Wet Masonry Paints. Designed and produced like ordinary paints, applied and reduced like ordinary paints, brushed out or sprayed like ordinary paints, but not ordinary paints at all. These materials while having all the characteristics of oil paints and the working qualities of oil paints are really chemical coatings designed after four years of continuous experiment and actual test to produce suitable coatings for wet masonry.
They are applied to either wet or dry surfaces, with moisture in the surface or over water standing on the surface, in exactly the same manner as an ordinary paint would be brushed or sprayed on a clean dry surface. In from four to six hours after application they will have forced all the surface water through the film of the coating and in ten hours will have generated sufficient heat to drive the moisture completely out of the film. In twelve hours the film of the coating will be hard and dry with the original surface water standing on the outside of the dried paint.
They are chemical coatings, prepared from vegetable, animal and mineral oil solutions in the form of ordinary liquid paints, sold by the gallon ready to apply with either a brush or spray as many coats as are required to secure adequate coverage. One gallon covers approximately 250 square feet of surface, one coat. Put up in 55 and 30 gallon drums, 5 and 1 gallon cans.

A plastic compound of putty consistency intended for use in filling expansion joints, so designed that it remains plastic and effectively com pensates for the natural expansion and contraction of the structure. Glidden Exterior Cement Paint
A dry powdered cement product which when mixed with the proper quantity of water produces a liquid cement paint suitable for either brush or spray application. A very practical and economical finish for exterior stucco, concrete, brick, cement plaster or concrete block surfaces. Can be applied on either exterior or interior surfaces and does not dust, powder, flake, chalk, blister, nor peel off. Produces a washable finish that effectually seals the surface and prevents the absorption of water. Any cfHorescnre shall lie scrubbed off with a solution of one part muriatic acid in ten parts of water anil shall therealter lie immediately rinsed with clear water to remove any excess'acid. Sidewalls and floors of swimming pools, also surfaces that have previously been painted with calcimine, whitewash, or cold water paint must be thoroughly cleaned and all of the old finish removed lwforc any cement paint is applied. Thoroughly saturate the clean surface with water before applying each coat of cement jiaint.
1st Coat: Mix ten pounds Glidden Exterior Cement Paint (Insert code number and name of color selected) with three quarts of water. Stir thoroughly living careful to mash all lumps. Apply with dutch ur white wash brush using a horizontal sweeping stroke. Use stiff bristle brushes and keep them full ol paint. Sprinkle this first coat with fine spray as soon as it has hardened sufficiently to not wash off.

There are three distinct uses for this product. Its acid and alkali resistance makes it applicable as a concrete tank and vat sealing medium employed to prevent the seepage commonly encountered in the storage of vinegars, pickles, molasses, fermenting foods and vegetable oils. Its water proofing qualities makes it readily adaptable to all rypes of membrane, mastic and surface waterproof construction, waterproof cement tinish-coats above or below grade and as a damp-proofing bond for plaster. Its resi lience, toughness and durability provides an excellent mastic flooring for either exterior or interior service that will withstand greater mechanical and chemical abuse than the ordinary concrete floor.
This product is a water emulsion of mineral asphalt designed to be mixed on the job with cement and silica sand. As almost every job under taken represents both a variation of conditions and different results to be accomplished it is impossible to cover in the available space the many specifications that apply. Makes an almost perfect imitation of new pressed brick on any brick surface when properly thinned with turpentine and applied over a suitable undercoating. Dries perfectly flat in from two to throe hours after appli cation. Rain will not injure the flat brick red surface after it has dried.
Venetian Red in Oil is the proper underco.uer or sealer to use with this product. The undercoat should be mixed on the basis of 100 pounds Venetian Red--5 gallons of Raw Linseed Oil--gallon Turpentine-- gallon Turpentine Japan.
After the undercoat ha* been allowed to thoroughly dry the finish coat of Paste Brick Red should be applied. The finish coat should be mixed on the basis of KH) [xntnd* Paste Brick Red to 5 gallons of turpentine. When applying the finish coat all the work must be gone over at one time as this product dries very rapidly and can not lie touched up without show ing spots.
No. 6130 Crystalline Hardener
Obtainable as either a dry crystal or liquid ready for use. A surtuce hardener for use on all types of concrete and cement surfaces, particularly floors, driveways, storage yards and service station pits where a hard, non-absorbent, stain-proof cemeiit or concrete surface is desired. The liquid is made by dissolving tine and one-half pounds of the crystals in one gallon of water and is applied either with brush, broom or spray. Three coats tire recommended allowing an over night dry between coats. This product is also used on vertical concrete ami cement structures to water proof and harden the exposed surface. All of these conditions indicate the constantly growing interest in this new era of evolving and extending the use of color. Witness the hospital, a fetv years ago it had a cold, glittering, unnatural interior, whose glossy whiteness fairly shouted efficiency and cleanliness. Today the same hos pital uses white only, if at all, in the professional units where light require ments make it necessary. In all the remaining portions of the building, soft, colorful tints are employed to produce natural environments that can be relied upon as an aid to getting well. What the hospital has already learned in the treatment of the sick is prophetic of the benefits that will accompany a like treatment of the healthy. Color is fundamentally a desirable and powerful influence upon happiness.
Naturally with this increased public interest the entire gamut of good, bad and indifferent use of color will be encountered. The experience, knowledge and motive of those responsible for color-schemes will vary so much that the results accomplished will in many cases prove unsatisfactory. The consideration of an appropriate color-scheme for ceiling, walls, column*, structural members and machines is an important and difficult task that should not be undertaken by anyone but an expert who has been trained to consider all of the contributing factor* pertaining to both the manu facturing limitations of the plant and the physical and chemical limitations of the finishing material.
It is significant that in a paint renter such as Cleveland, Ohio, with seventy-four paint manufacturers of varying size and reputation. It is lightly pigmented with very opaque pigments that provide sufficient coverage to serve ns a satisfactory under coat without reducing the amount of oil necessary to properly seal the surface. 1'nder normal drying conditions this material will dry hard over night with sufficient coverage to permit of satisfactory two coat work if desired. Fumeproof materials cannot be made that will prevent the deposit of dirt upon the surface. This material will not discolor in the presence of fumes that would destroy the color of ordinary materials. Doing an un usually hard semi-gloss material it will not soften and pick up din as other fumeproof materials are prone to do. Made entirely front varnish this product is naturally harder to brush than the oil enamels and because of this feature it should be sprayed whenever practicable. No. 1445 "INSILITE" Fumeproof Gloss

The formulation of this material is such tliat it will remain white in the presence of abnormal fume conditions such as are often encountered in the cooking of foods, baking of bread and cakes, and the production of milk and icecream. The liquid vehicle is composed entirely of varnish and for that reason this product does not have the free working qualities of the other oil materials. The pigments used are all fumeproof and are care fully chosen to insure a pure white color, strong hiding |>ower and solid coverage. This is a full gloss finish coat that can be applied either full body for brushing or reduced with turpentine or mineral spirits to the proper consistency' for spraying. I 'alike many so called fumeproof finishes, this enamel will dry hard in from twelve to sixteen hours and will not soften up and collect dirt upon the surface. Glidden Factory Mill Whites
As the name implies these materials are uniform quality, moderate price products designed to give satisfactory service in factories and mills where physical conditions do not justify the highest grade paints. Manu factured in flat, eggshell and gloss quality for normal exposure and fumeproof gloss for abnormal exposure. These products are all solid covering, combination pigment paints, hating a positive reflection co-efficient of 80% at the time of application.
No. 1402 Factory Mill White--Flat
A combination flat undercoat and finish coat for use wherever a flat finish is desired. When used as an undercoat it should be applied only over either a previously painted surface or a new surface that has been properly neutralized and sealed. When used as a finish coat it can be washed as often as desired. Manufactured from a combination of vege table oils and solid covering pigments, this material offers a very practical and satisfactory flat finish at moderate cost. This material can either be used as an intermediate coat on new work or as a finish coat wherever an eggshell finish is required. Made from a combination of vegetable oils and covering pigments designed to pro duce a solid covering, easy working, positive white that will dry overnight to a hard durable eggshell finish that can be washed and scrubbed whenever desired. On new work where three coats are recommended this material is particularly valuable as the intermediate coat to prevent oil absorption and flatting in the finish coat. No. 1404 Factory Mill White Gloss
This is a very fine quality medium priced gloss mill white for all types of normal interior ex[>osure. This material has a reflection co-etiftcient of 80%, at the time of application. Under normal conditions it will lose approx imately 8% in twelve months due to dust accumulation but will return to full 80% upon washing. Over a period of five years washed twice a year this product will maintain an average co-efficient of 70% which is excep tionally high for this class of finish and illustrates the excellent quality of this economical gloss enamel. Positive white covering pigments chosen for their known resistance to the discoloration of organic fumes are combined in this product with fossilized gum varnishes ol the tvpe least affected by hot steam and the various gases encountered in the cooking ol loods. As the name implies this is a lightly pigmented oil first coater or sealer for use on new plaster, cement, concrete, brick, stucco or wood sur faces before the application of finishing coats. It is an excellent all purpose sealer suitable for use on all types of wood and masonry suriaces to stop suction and prevent oil absorption in the finishing coats. It has no neu tralizing value whatever and can be saponified readily by calcium hydroxide in new masonry. Use it its recommended for excellent sealing and priming coat work. This product is fully described in its name. A superior white enamel in working qualities, in appearance and in durability. Glidden One Coat Egg Shell Enamels
These materials are one coat interior eggshell enamels made entireh from lithopone with only sufficient tinting color added to secure the varioti: shades. They will dry to touch overnight with a durable, eggshell sheet possessing slightly more gloss than a flat wall paint. They arc designee especially for finishing interior ceilings and walls of factory offices, cafe terias and recreation rooms. They have the solid coverage of flat paints but can be washed or scrubbed with practically the same resistance to wear as is usually associated with gloss enamels. These are extremely dense products, possessing excellent coverage, strong hiding power and excellent flow. They tire easy to apply either by brush or spray, level out well, do not show laps or brush marks and nitty be stippled if desired. They are applied full body for finish coat brush work and etui be reduced with either turpentine or mineral spirits to the proper consistency for spray application. On new work lie sure the surface lias been properly neutral ized and sealed (see specifications page 59). No. 1414 Acid White Enamel
As the name implies this is a special white enamel designed to resist the discoloration produced by various acid fumes, particularly the Calcium Acid Sulphite fumes present in the wood pulp digesting processes of the paper industry, the hydrochloric acid liquor bleaches of the artificial silk industry, the acid dye stuffs used in the dye plants of the textile industry, the chromic acid fumes encountered in metal plating and the acetic acid fumes present in all processes of pickling foods. It is formulated front specially selected pigments having known resistance to acid fume dis coloration and is ground in a prepared vehicle that will not darken when exposed to any acid fume condition ranging from dilute acetic or boracic, through sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric, etc. This product has a some what higher gloss than "Insilite" semi-gloss previously described on page 58 and is not quite as white in color. It is more opaque than "Insilite" Fume Proof Gloss and is easier to apply. It is at present being used in a variety of industries such as paper, artificial silk, dye plants, tobacco, metal plating, galvanizing, drugs and cosmetics. It requires overnight to dry. One gallon covers 450 square feet of surface one coat. This material weighs fifteen pounds per gallon.

No. 1406 Gloss White Sealcoat
In many of the processes employed in the preparation of cereal foods, particularly in the baking; of cookies and cakes there are very often de posits of burnt sugar, butter fats and similar ingredients found on the ceiling and side walls of the oven room adjacent to the front and side openings of the oven. It is virtually ini[tossible to entirely remove such deposits so that they will not bleed through and discolor the new finish. Gloss White Sealcoat was originally designed for application over these discolored areas to seal in the fats and prevent bleeding. Its use has since been extended to scaling asphalts, creosote oils, coal tar pitches and all similar types of bleeding stains. It is applied full hotly either for brush or spray and requires overnight to dry. One coat is sufficient and one gallon will cover approximately 400 square feet of surface. No. 1413 Loft Spraycoat White
A very practical and economical one coat flat white interior finish suit able for lofts, warehouses, storage sheds and similar structures. .Supplied only in spraying consistency ready for the gun. Requires overnight to dry but seldom necessitates a second coat due to its excellent coverage, good ad hesion and strong hiding power. One gallon covers approximately 450 square feet of surface one coat sprayed. Weight thirteen and one-half pounds. Put up in 50 and 50 gallon drums, 5 and 1 gallon cans.
No. 1415 Zone Marking White
This material is manufactured for center line striping work on vitrified brick, cement and asphalt highways. It is also used extensively as a floor marking paint for plant and mill requirements and as a curb paint in serv ice stations. It covers solid in one coat and acts as a sealer to prevent bleeding. Dries hard to use in forty minutes and retains its original white ness over a longer period of exterior exposure. Supplied in thin consis tency for road machine striping. Weight twelve and three-quarter pounds per gallon. One gallon covers approximately 800 lineal feet of five inch stripe one coat. Put up in 5. 1, G and G gallon cans.
No. 1447 White Cellulose Acousticoat
With the recent advent of talking pictures many theatres found it neces sary to improve the acoustic properties of their auditoriums. Glidden Wet Wall Whites
A chemical coating produced and applied like ordinary paint, carrying die same covering pigments as are used in ordinary paint and reduced with either Turpentine or Mineral Spirits for spray application. This product having till the characteristics of ordinary paint is nevertheless a chemical enamel that will produce a solid covering opaque, white film having firm adhesion and a solid bond on a wet surface. Six years of development are behind these two products. While they are both revolutionary in character, they are sound, practical products filling a definite need in the maintenance field. Glidden Germproof White Enamels
In the fermentation of years various manufacturers have for many wars encountered serious difficulties in their attempts to prevent the growth of the yeast spores on the painted walls and ceilings of their fer menter rooms. This "wild yeast" as they term it. has a tendency to collect in corners, on top of ledges and beams, around window sills and above piping where it multiplies and grows very rapidly. To prevent this unde sirable growth the Germproof While Hnamels and t ndercoats were origi nally developed. They contain in solution an aseptic germicidal salt in corporated chemically with the oxidising oils in such a manner as to exude continuously a protective gas of sufficient strength to maintain a toxic paint film that will prevent the growth of the yeast spore and similar microscopic vegetable organisms. Glidden Pipe and Equipment Enamels
Designed to set up dust free in three hours and dry hard in seven' hours thus providing a finishing material that can be applied to equipment with no loss of time out of service. This fast dry is obtained through preoxidizing the oils used in these enamels. Glidden "Metallite"
This is a readv mixed aluminum enamel so line in mesli that it is impossible to see the individual flakes of bronze with the naked eye. The 1 i c 1 it id vehicle is very dense and floats the bronze in successive layers overlapping the minute Hakes upon each other to produce a solid metallic him with a brilliant high gloss silver finish. By manufacturing this pro duct in a ready mixed form it is possible to secure a protective film of the varnish oxer the top of the aluminum. This characteristic is responsible for the waterproofness, toughness and durability ol "Metallite" under con ditions where ordinary aluminum paints could not be used at all.
In [lacking houses it can be used satisfactorily in the presence of fatty acid fumes and is also used extensively as an odorless wall sealer on the interior walls and ceilings of cold storage rooms. In the general food industry it is used extensively to combat the free acid conditions present in the manufacture of mayonnaise, horse-radish, pickles, ketchup and sim ilar condiments made with xinegar.
Interior Laundry Equipment Maintenance
In bakeries it is used on egg beating and mixing machines, asan-interior finish for proof boxes and as a settler to prevent bleeding of accumu lated grease around and above the ovens. In dairies it is used to combat the live lactic acid on blitter churns, milk bottling machines, ice cream freezers, pasteurizers, milk and ice cream cans, tubs and tanks.

ingredients to produce Congo Black. Gliddenspar is a name coined by
The Glidden Company to describe a synthetic gum condensate of crude
coal tar solvent naphtha, phenol and sulphuric acid. This gum is one of
the most important recent achievements of our development laboratories
and is an exclusive Glidden product. It is practically insoluble in both
acid and caustic, blends perfectly with all types of oxidizing oils, is more
than three times as tough as the most durable natural varnish gums and
cannot be dissolved by petroleum solvents. The spar varnish referred to

These copper units are made up of segments bolted together and these segments require caulking to prevent leaks. Glidden Inside Flat Wall Paints
A sanitary oil paint product containing no poisonous materials. This material does now show brush marks or laps and can be applied quickly and easily by either brush or spray. Due to the construction of the pro duct and the high percentage of pigment best results are obtained by ap plying full flowing coats rather than attempting to brush out thin coats as usually recommended for ordinary paints. Glidden Service Station Pump Enamels
The wonderful qualities of "Gliddenspar" gum, previously re ferred to in conjunction with "Gliddenspar" varnish, power machinery enamels, "Congo Black" and various other places through this book, are again advantageously incorporated in this beautiful line of service station pump enamels. ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION (NEW WORK) Preparation of Surface: The surface to be painted shall be clean, dry and free from all dust, dirt and other foreign matter. New plaster walls shall be neutralized with a liberal wash coat of a solution consisting of three pounds Sulphate of Zinc dissolved m one gallon of water. Old plaster walls shall have alt large cracks, breaks and nail holes properly filled with Plaster of Paris which has been mixed with two parts of water and one part of vinegar or dilute acetic acid. 1st or Priming Coat: On either plaster, wall board, wood or cloth the first coat shall be No. 29 Satin Wall Enamel Undercoat. Apply this sealing coat full body for either brush or spray. Allow ample time for thorough drying. 2nd or Finishing Coat: Glidden Satin Wall Enamel, (Insert code number and name of color selected). No. 1901 Interior Trim Varnish
A high grade gloss varnish for use on the finest interior trim. This
material is light in color, has fine flowing and brushing qualities and is exceptionally elastic and durable. It sets dust free in three to four hours and dries in from twenty-four to thirty-six hours, according to conditions. Put up in 5, 1, \i, yi, and yi gallon cans.

Glidden Ornamental Wood Stains are for use on new wood that has not
been previously finished in any way. Should you desire to use them on wood that has been finished it is necessary to remove the old finish with
