REMARKS
The subject bulletin is issued to update the information on Vapex House Paint Exterior Primer 45 White. There has been no change in the product.
LABEL DIRECTIONS
USE:
The original (1964) label directions stated in part, "NEVER
use this primer over old painted surfaces." This was changed in
1967 to: "A fast drying primer for use on exterior UNPAINTED WOOD,
and for priming bare spots on old painted surfaces under VAPEX HOUSE
PAINT. May be applied while wood is damp. NEVER use this primer
under oil or alkyd paints." In 1969, the last sentence was deleted.
Our continuing experience showed good results when ZA45 was used
as a primer for oil or alkyd paints but we prefer to specify House
Paint Exterior Primer 305 White.
*
KNOTS & SAPPY SPOTS:
The 1964 label recommended the use of P&L WP578 Sealer for touch-up. This caused staining of some Vapex Latex House Paint tints and White. In 1967 shellac was recommended for sealing knots.
TINTING:
All reference to tinting with Vapex Tinting Color was deleted in 1969 since these Colorants were discontinued. Up to one pint of Vapex Latex House Paint Ready-Mixed or Machine Colors made from bases may be added, if color is desired. .ZA45 cannot be tinted with P&L Machine Colorants or P&L Multipurpose Tinting Colors.
BLEEDING:
0007-PTL-000807
Bleeding or staining from water soluble dyes in bare cedar or redwood is inhibited by lead compounds in ZA45. If the first coat of primer is discolored or streaked by bleeding dyes, apply a second coat of primer before proceeding with the finish coats. This is consistent with the label directions.

ZA45, because of its lead content, should not be used on areas that might be chewed by children or by livestock, or where lead containing exterior paints are prohibited by law.
PERFORMANCE
NEW WOOD: Vapex House Paint Exterior Primer 45 White is always recommended as the first coat although it is necessary only on cedar and redwood. White pine and yellow pine could be primed with Vapex Latex House Paint.
We do not recommend a two-coat system on new wood as durability is inadequate. Only a three-coat system should be specified.
FACTORY PRIMED HARDBOARD OR WOOD FIBERBOARD: House Paint Exterior Primer 305 White should be used even though the construction material has been "factory primed". 305 White, a moisture resistant primer, is necessary to seal the board to prevent swelling and warping upon exposure. The factory primer provides inadequate protection. ZA45 is unnecessary because bleeding Is no problem.
OLD WORK:
For old work where bleeding is unlikely, one or two coats of Vapex Latex House Paint should be used. ZA45, however, should be used for spot priming where bare wood is exposed.
