T .LGSS PREVENTION DE?L All members were in attendance. Pat Walzel was recognized as the new Group 1, Zone 1 representative replacing James H. Martin (retirement). The guest speaker was Mike McCullough. He reviewed Monsanto and contract personnel injuries of January/February, the status of the Countdown Safety Program, and the incident investigation findings on the January days away from work injury. OLD BUSINESS Blocked Views for Heavy Equipment Operators o Heavy equipment operators continue to report dumpsters located partially in the street or in locations which make heavy equipment movement diffi cult. This was brought up as new business in the January meeting. Locations mentioned: --North of Department 53 (near Dept. 50 tanks) --Monsanto Avenue and South Street --Main Street and Fourth Avenue --North of Department 15/16 (near maintenance shop) --Main Street and Third Avenue --South of Main Street and First Avenue --Center Street and Ninth Avenue o This concern was brought to the attention of Howard Jackson. All areas will be surveyed and action taken to relocate dumpsters away from the street. This is a new problem and will require continued monitoring to insure dumpster contractor follow-through. SC 12979 LAMO14190 Gene Crane, et al -2- March 19, 1982 NEW BUSINESS Insufficient Machine Shop Door Size o The machine shop door on the north end of the main shops building is narrow and is partially blocked by a vending machine. This makes rig entry difficult. In addition, there is not sufficient door height to allow rig entry. Only the smallest rig can enter. o This is an item which was brought up previously to the machinist unit/craft contact supervisor. An evaluation of cost and justification for widening of this doorway is currently underway. Excessive Overhead Crane Speed - Main Shop o The new main shop overhead crane has only one speed, which is too fast to allow small movement without a jerking motion. This is the second overhead crane and was installed recently. o This concern has been addressed by the craft safety contact supervisor. An engineering study was conducted on the overhead crane system. The speed was found to be acceptable by Engineering and OSHA standards. Just recently the control button was modified to aid in making small adjustments Research Maintenance Unit/Craft Team o The research maintenance area which is normally staffed with over 20 crafts men does not have unit/craft safety promotion team representation. The group is made up of pipefitters, boilermakers, machinists, and electricians We recommend a craft promotion team be formed. o `This recommendation will be reviewed with SAC for a policy decision. Breathing Air Hoses o There are reports of breathing air hoses coming loose from the air supply manifolds while air masks are in use. This appears to be related to sticking of the snap connection fittings due to corrosion. Some units (AN and HCN) have installed protective boxes around the air supply mani fold fittings, and cabinets for storage of breathing air hoses. This should be considered plantwide. What is the procedure for breathing air hose inspection? o The LPsS Department is looking into the availability of stainless steel hose connection fittings which should not corrode. This alternative will be considered along with the need for protective cabinets. However, it must be emphasized that each individual has the responsibility of in specting for hose defects and for secure fastening to the manifold before use. Presently breathing air hoses are checked when cleaned by LP&S personnel. The plant hose inspection procedure bulletin is now being reviewed by SHAC. Breathing air hose inspection will be addressed in this review. SC 12980 Gene Crane, et al -3- March 19, 1982 Control Lab Chemical Exposure Concerns o The janitors have reported that sample disposal cans are sometimes over filled. This can result in spillage of hazardous chemicals (AN) and excessive can weight when lifted down from hood locations. The sample draining stations inside and outside of the lab building need improved hoods systems to reduce chemical vapor exposure to personnel. The janitors also expressed concern over excessive odors during bottle break ing (station located east of control lab building). o These concerns were referred to and will be handled by the laboratory safety contact supervisor--Henry Anderson. The presence of a janitor (Doug Newsom) on the laboratory safety committee should aid by providing another route for communication of janitor safety concerns. Unit/Craft Safety Suggestion Log Books The effectiveness of safety suggestion log books was discussed--how often used, timeliness of answers, and time to implement suggestions. There was a wide range of viewpoints expressed by hourly safety committee members, ranging from negative to positive. Hourly safety committee members were asked by Dennis Kos to follow this up with the groups they represent, and bring specific items for discussion in the next hourly safety committee meeting. D. D.
