Ingalls Date 4/5/71 Full Name Address Baker Castor Oil Co. Bayonne, N.J. Mfrs. of Interviewed Mr. M. K. Smith - Technology Mgr. (Telecon) OBJECTIVE Follow up on status of RG-144 evaluation. OBSERVATIONS Mr. Smith said that the RG-144 was working extremely well in a proprietary application which he was not at liberty to discuss. He did say that the asbestos was being used in conjunction with a dry mix and some time back inquired about the toxicology of cur product and whether or not they should have warning labels on the packages. I informed him that we do have warning labels on our packages and sent him, some of our literature on the toxicology of chrysotile asbestos, "he informed me that they had since decided against putting a warning label on their package in view of the fact that it is mixed with other ingredients. I offered to stop by in the near future; however, he said that the product was working extremely well and did not feel that we could be of any further assistance at this time. He did say that he wished we would raise our price, that it was -too good a product at too low a price and apparently quite competitive with their Thixin produces. He said that the product with which the RG-144 is being used is presently being marketed and it will be a while before they have a feel for the volume required, hov/ever, he anticipated uses in the neighborhood of 100,000 lb. a year. RECOMMENDED ACTION BLI - Follow up periodically every 4 to 5 months. <JCC ,, ,y ' v/ Typed 4/23/71 bsn r; o 3 "4, CC for B. L. Ingalls R. T. Larkin T. P. Norris J. W. Respond to request for information. OBSERVATION'S Baker is using moderate quantities of RG-144 as a component in a thixotropic material that ends up in coatings. In view of the new Environmental Health law, he needed some information on toxicology, particularly in view of labeling requirements. Since his requirements were rather vague, it was agreed that we would send him some background info, and they would ask further questions as their needs are better defined. Note: - At Mr. Gayle's request info sent to Mr. Dan S. Bolley, Tech. Director. ACTION HBR - Send toxicology information. Done 7/19/71 BLI - Follow in a couple of weeks. OBJECTIVE Introductory call on regular user of RG-144. OBSERVATIONS No problems with our product. 1974 usage should exceed 1973 demands but no estimate of how much. 144 being used to produce Thixseal, a Baker thixotrope containing a wax of some type. Compounded by Middlesex Chemical in Sommerville, NJ. None used at Bayonne. Discussed warning labels which apparently Baker has not used in the past. Kent is in the process of having one printed which, in agreement with their lawyer, will cover the OSHA regulations. As soon as the mixing equipment at Middlesex Chemical has been repaired, they would like us to run a dust count for them. This has been discussed in the past and I agreed to have it run when convenient for all. Baker is going through a big reorganization. Are to be known as Industrial Chemical Division of National Lead. Will be headed by Carl Moore, a V.P. of-National Lead. A large number of personnel changes are taking effect and Kent feels that it may touch him. ACTION None at this time. However, because of the personnel changes going on it is felt that routine calls should be made in order to keep a pulse on the situation. Typed 3/19/74 cjb A u i
