The following report cover* the highlight* of Association actlvltle* for the third quarter of 1964. More detailed Information on these activ ities or others not enumerated will be supplied on request. So attempt has been made to cover routine activities, and research 1* covered In a separate report of the research director.
GENERAL
1. Information Bulletin. Two nore In this series vere issued and circulated to meabera during the quarter.
2. American Mining Congress. The Secretary attended the annual Western Division meeting of this organization in Portland, Oregon.
O 3. Hew Staff Member. A new member was added to the staff on August 1. He Is Connel A. Baker, Jr., formerly with Ohio Power Co. and the Chlo Public Utilities Commission. His major activities with L.I.A. will be to prceote storage batteries through the electric utility companies and to prooote the use of lead products, such aa cable sheathing and paints, used In large quantities by utilities.
fa. A.S.T.M. The Secretary has been requested to serve as chairman of a Task Croup of Subcommittee 2 of A.S.T.K. Ccmittee B-2 to study ASTM 325-5&T, Refined Secondary Lead, and report back to the Subcommittee. The Task Croup Is In process of formation.
5. Other Development Associations. The first In a serlea of quarterly reports on activities was exchanged with other lead development associations abroad as a step toward closer cooperative action and exchange of ideas.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
6. Philadelphia Air Pollution Control Offices. Hr. Walt Jackson,
Director of the City of Philadelphia Air Pollution Control Activities,
vsa visited and presented with a copy of the Stanford Research Institute's
Final Report of this ILERO-sponsored study of lead In the atmosphere. The
particular Interest of Hr. Jackson was directed to the data obtained In
that portion of the study which was concerned with lead In the atmosphere
of Philadelphia and obtained during the two veeks that the sampling crew

spent there. He was Dost appreciative of our efforts and asked many per tinent questions about the study and Its relationship to his city and the
others covered by the sampling crew.

7- Cincinnati Air Pollution Centre! Offices. A copy of the IL2R0sponsored research study on lead In CLc atmosphere by Stanford vis presented to Hr. Charles Gruber, Head of the City of Cincinnati's Air Pollution Con trol District. A detailed discussion vas held of the results that vere obtained la the City of Cincinnati and Hr. Gruber's questions about the results and the techniques vere answered.
8. Study of Paint Toxicity. The Health send Safety Director accompanied by Hr. Dan Ring of the Rational Paint, Voml6h and Lacquer Association visited the Eazeltoo Laboratories In Washington, D.C., to request their help In pre paring a proposal for the study of lead paint toxicity. It Is proposed that this study, If approved, vlll be Jointly sponsored by ILZRO and NPVLA.
9. Visit to European Lead Associations. The Health and Safety Director started his visit to discuss local problems relating to health and safety In European countries served by lead trade associations. He Is visiting association offices In Italy, Prance, Germany and England to report on American experience of Interest In these countries and to discuss vlth theu their experiences, os veil as visiting a number of lead using Industries In lurope. More details vlll be available after Ms trip Is completed In October.
10. Television. Protests have been lodged vlth the producer and broad casting company on a repeat telecast of one of the Ben Casey series cf pro grams based on a case of lead poisoning vhich L.I.A. believes to be factually erroneous,
11. Industrial Lcvl Poisoning. A chspter vlth thli title by Dr. Robert A. Kehoe vas reprinted from the book IMX.oTr.IAL HIGEETCE AND TOXICOLOGY by Dr. Patty, notice of the availability of the reprints vas carried in a Health and Safety Bulletin and as a result nearly 100 copies have been dis tributed on request. A quantity vas also supplied to the L.D.A. In London for their distribution In Britain.
IP. Kettering Toxicology Abstracts. Negotiations are under way for possible publication of these abstracts or. lead toxicology which have been prepared for internal 'use only for some years by the Kettering Laboratories. All details of forn and distribution have r.ot yet been resolved and are under study by a subcommittee of the Health and Safety Cocsslttee.

13- LEAD The second and third 1964 Issues cf this quarterly vere called during the quarter.
14. Inquiries. Nearly 7,500 Inquiries vere handled by the Association staff In the first eight months of 1964. Of these more than 1,500 vere of a detailed technical nature requiring personal or special rather than routine handling. Nearly 45,000 pieces of L.I.A. literature vere distributed In other than bulk mailings.

17. Solder Article. Arrangements were mode for staff preparation of nev article on soldering methods particularly autooatlon, for publication in METAL PRODUCT MANUFACTURING. This vould later be reprinted for L.I.A. distribution as a companion piece to SOLDER AJH) SOLDER ALLOYS prepared for MACHINE DESIGN last year.
18. Lead-Lined Pool Problems. The large lead-lined pool at the h'orld's Fair was subjected to cyclical buckling when the lead was laid In extremely hot veather and flattened out during the cool of night. Fearing possible fatigue damage, the pool was Inspected with the contractor and methods devised for minimizing this possibility In future large pool Installations.
19. iVrmbrone Waterproofing Catalog. A new 8-page catalog to appear In Sweet's l'>69 Architectural File was prepared on this subject, which In cludes pool and planter linings, and turned over to Sveet's. It contains case histories and coaplete Installation specifications.
20. Tcrne Plate. An article on this lead-alloy coated product was
prepared and appeared In a special supplement of the AMERICAN FETAL .'ARRET dealing with coated metals.
21. Lead Wool. As a result of featuring this product as used on Hew
York's Verrozono bridge, a ntmber of Inquiries ore being received. Lacking
literature on the subject a brief mimeographed memorandum on the subject
was prepared and circulated to member manufacturers of lead wool for com
ment. It is being used to answer Inquiries.
