Superintendent loan Frazier said the contaminated sites are on the north side of each campus. Both sites together measure less than an acre, she said. The Foothills Community Partnership discovered the PCBs during soil sampling at the schools, according to Solutia officials. Under an agreement with Foothills, Solutia is responsible for removing soil contaminated with PCBs, said Solutia Remedial Projects Manager Gayle Macolly. PCBs, a suspected carcinogen, were produced in west Anniston by Monsanto Co. from 1929 to 1971. Rain runoff carried PCBs that escaped the plant through drainage ditches to Snow Creek, which flows into Choccolocco Creek. The chemical also settled in the yards of many homes near the plant. Solutia was spun off from Monsanto in 1997 and assumed the company's liability for the contamination when it took over the plant. Pharmacia Corp., which merged with the former Monsanto Co., also is responsible for Anniston's PCB cleanup. "We're trying to get it fast-tracked so we can get it done before the start of the next school session," Macolly said before Thursday's meeting. In other action, the school board: --Approved small salary increases for 28 non-certified employees. The increases amounted to around $13,000 and were paid for with federal, state and local funds. --Hired Phillip Posey as the new assistant principal of Anniston Middle School and Sherron Morrow as the new principal of Tenth Street Elementary.
