T AACPP Trade Release ACTION REQUIRED: Review for information
Internal Correspondence
date November 16,1981
Enclosed is an article published in the October, 1981 issue of Construction Contracting Monthly, circulation 55,000, which resulted from one of the trade press releases made through the Public Education Program. It is interesting to note the time lag between date of release (June, 1981) and date of publication. Trade publications typically hold press releases for future issues and "space fillers."
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.

. :.i;; According to Mac A. Weaver,
Acting Chief of the. Water Supply
Branch, "Based on our findings, we
do not believe the citizens ... are
. subject to any measurable health risk
" from asbestos in their drinking water.
"Because of the acknowledged
health problems related to asbestos
inhaled and/or ingested by workers
V in occupational exposure, it is natural
for people to extend this concern to
other exposures. EPA and the scienti
fic community have felt that exten
sive ' study is justified to determine
if there is a level at which asbestos in drinking water might represent a
measurable risk to public health.
No conclusive scientific evidence has
yet linked gastrointestinal cancer inci
dence with ingestion of asbestos
through drinking water."
Weaver noted that the presence of
asbestos fibers in drinking water may
result from naturally-occurring sources
in the ground water or from asbestos-
cement (A/C) pipe when highly cor
rosive waters are conveyed.
