As a re su lt of our recen t luncheon m eeting, I have asked Dave F a s se tt to sp eak on future needs and goals of In d u stria l H ygiene in the place of the OHI p resen tatio n (see p re lim in a ry p ro g ram , enclosed). Dave ad v ises that he w ill give som e thought to a c c re d ita tio n and m ay have som ething to say on it but did not w ant to be com m itted to this n arro w an a sp e c t of In d u stria l H ygiene planning, w hich is understandable.
F o r purposes of your m eeting w ith the OHI A ccred itatio n C om m ittee next m onth, I should like to re p e at m y p erso n al conviction th at th e re is a need for an objective au th o rity to review and c e rtify the adequacy of p ro g ra m s of occupational h ealth in in d u stry . O ccupational h ealth includes In d u stria l H ygiene as w ell as O ccupational M edicine, and it is n e c e ssa ry th at the p ro c e ss of a c c re d itatio n have outstanding com petence in judging adequacy of p e rfo rm an c e in e v ery d iscip lin e involved. O bviously, O ccupational M edicine w ill be a key function, as it is the O ccupational P hysician, o rd in arily , who is in the b est positio n to decide from am ong the num erous h e a lth -re la te d pro b lem s com ing to his attention, w hich need to be d e alt w ith ex p ed ien tly , on an e m p iric le b a sis (in w hich p ro fe s sio n a l judgm ent is the only determ in an t) and w hich, on the o th er hand, lend th e m selv e s to In d u stria l H ygiene m e a su re m e n t and scie n tific m an ag em en t involving te ch n o logical and engineering controls.
By inform ation copy, I am advising D r. Kehoe of our d iscu ssio n . I have ask ed him to co n sid er w ays in w hich we m ight p ro ceed to attem p t to re in te re s t the organized m edical com m unity in In d u strial H ygiene, in hopes th a t Dave F a s se tt and perhaps other In d u strial H ygienists as w ell, m ay be added to the AMA C ouncil on O ccupational H ealth. We should also be co n sid erin g , co n cu rren tly , w ays in w hich th e field of In d u s tria l H ygiene can be b e tte r in te g ra te d in to th e O H I's p r o g ra m s--eith er d irectly or by asso ciatio n w ithin som e joint accred itin g agency.
As m entioned at the tim e of our m eeting, I believe IH F m ay be helpful in su p p o rtin g the d evelopm ent of the above jo in t a c c re d ita tio n co n cep t and fu n ctio n

and w ill be happy to a s s is t in the developm ent of a specific OHI p ro p o sal fo r
IH F 's B oard of T ru s te e s to review at th e ir m eetin g on O ctober 13. It m ight
be p o ssib le to m ake an announcem ent during the M anagem ent C onference next
day w hich, in view of Dave F a s s e tt's p o ssib le m en tio n of such a need, would
be v e ry tim ely . Should OHI decide not to c o llab o rate in such planning o r to
discontinue its c e rtific a tio n se rv ic e , it w ould be esp e c ially tim ely and a p p ro
