It was also a pleasure to see you again March 29th at dinner with our government relations group from Monsanto. I applaud your efforts to attack the drug problem in the state and wish you continued success. You made a statement at the . Alabama Chemical Association with regard to working with the ' Attorney General's office to resolve environmental issues that struck a responsive note. In January 1985, the Attorney General brought to Monsanto's attention a matter of polychlorinated biphenyls ,v(PCB<s);, in the' ^sedimentsof Snow Creek,Vdownstream of -Monsanto's Anniston'," Alabama*site. In February 1985, representatives of Monsanto met with members of the Attorney General's staff to discuss the findings and plan a course of action. Additional discussions were held in March and April with both the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) and the Attorney General's office to develop a mutually acceptable sampling program to define the situation. In May 1985, a sampling protocol was proposed and on June 18, 1985, the ` sediments were sampled by representatives of Monsanto, Attorney General's office and ADEM. DOCKET NO. __0_0_0,0__2_99 On October 2, 1985, a meeting was held with representatives of the Attorney General's staff, ADEM, and EPA Region IV to review the results of the sediment sampling and plan the next course of action. The EPA stated that they would defer any action to ADEM. It was agreed that Monsanto would submit a proposed clean-up plan for approval. ^Uf\ nooooo-j. The representative of the * Attorney General said he would push to get approval of the plan, from EPA and others, and would be back to Monsanto within a week with any necessary changes. tAs...yet, this matter is. still open. A Monsanto believes that the proposal represents the best resolution of original concerns and Monsanto would like to complete the program in 19 88.
