Somerville, MA Facility/Process Description: Mystic Valley Foundry, Inc. ("Mystic Valley Foundry") operated a foundry located at 14 Horace Street, Somerville Massachusetts. The facility opened in 1936 and worked with customers to craft aluminium, brass and bronze casting. Mystic Valley Foundry was one of few specialty foundries in New England and could make specialized parts and pieces upon request. Mystic Valley Foundry made parts for several kinds of industries including automotive, construction, furniture, lighting and marine. Mystic Valley Foundry operated 3 furnaces that were powered by natural gas. Some of the metals used at the facility were non-ferrous metals including zinc, brass, bronze, steel, and aluminum. Mystic Valley Foundry's melt capacity was 0.1 ton/year. In the past they purchased scrap metal in low quantities and would additionally recycle their own scrap metal internally. Mystic Valley Foundry ceased operations in January of 2023 and as of Monday May 1, 2023, the facility had been sold to a new owner. Potentially Applicable Clean Air Act Requirements: 40 CFR Part 63, Subpart ZZZZZZ - National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants: Area Source Standards for Aluminum, Copper, and Other Nonferrous Foundries Previous Enforcement Actions: A "Detailed Facility Report" from EPA's Enforcement and Compliance History Online database indicates that there have been no informal or formal enforcement actions taken against Mystic Valley Foundry with respect to this facility in the past five years. Opening Conference: Ms. Patel and Mr. Mohamoud arrived at the facility at 9:30 AM and met with Arthur J. Anthony. Ms. Patel presented her credentials and initiated an opening conference. Ms. Patel asked Mr. Anthony about the operational status of the facility. Mr. Anthony said that the facility stopped operating in January 2023 and as of Monday, May 1, 2023, the facility had been sold. Mr. Anthony said Mystic Valley Foundry had ceased operations due to a shortage of employees. Ms. Patel asked about the business relationship between Mystic Valley Foundry and McIntire Brass Works, Inc. ("McIntire Brass Works"). Mr. Anthony said that they are two separate unrelated businesses located in the same building, but in separate rooms. Mr. Mohamoud asked Mr. Anthony about the operational status of McIntire Brass Works and Mr. Anthony said it is working on its last orders before leaving the building, but it officially closed. The inspectors followed Mr. Anthony to the back of the facility and observed 3 furnaces. Mr. Anthony said that, prior to the closure of Mystic Valley Foundry only one of the three furnaces had been operational, and it had been years since other two had been used. Mr. Anthony then led inspectors to a room where inspectors observed a sand belt and other material. Records Reviewed: Ms. Patel and Mr. Mohamoud did not review any records on-site.
