DRAFT 2 April 10, 1972 LETTER TO: Top Executive All Vinyl Chloride Aerosol Customers SUBJECT: Cautions on Use of Vinyl Chloride in Personal Care and Household Spray Formulations t Dear Mr. : This letter is being separately sent to each of our aerosol customers. Vinyl chloride has been reported to generate malignant tumors of the skin, salivary glands and lungs during a series of experiments with rats after exposure for 4 hours per day, 5 days per week for 12 months at concentrations of 3 percent, ("Oncogenic Response of-Rat Skin, Lungs, and Bones to Vinyl Chloride," P. L. Viola, A. Bigotti, and A. Caputo, Cancer Research 31, 516-522, May 1971). The Manufacturing Chemists Association is sponsoring new studies to confirm or refute these findings and to establish a safe tolerance level. In view of the above report, however, we believe it prudent to advise our customers of the existence of such report and suggest that vinyl chloride not be used in personal care or household formulations where repeated exposures to relatively high concentrations are reasonably to be expected.
