A coalition of states led by New York and California today sued the EPA over Administrator Scott Pruitt's delay of an early step in the implementation process for the 2015 ozone standard.
"One in three New Yorkers are breathing dangerous levels of smog pollution pouring in from other states. Yet again the Trump EPA has chosen to put polluters before the health of the American people," New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement.
Pruitt in June announced that he would put off by one year a deadline to decide which areas of the country are not in compliance with the new standard. The move came amid a Trump administration review of the Obama-era standard, which was criticized by industry groups as too severe and by public health advocates as too lax.
Environmental groups sued last month, seeking to force EPA to comply with the Oct. 1 deadline.
The states on the suit are New York, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington, as well as D.C.
WHAT'S NEXT: EPA's response in the initial lawsuit brought by environmental groups is due on Thursday. This new lawsuit likely will be consolidated with the environmentalists' case.
