The meeting was called to order by President Griffis and an address of welcome extended to the group. Special note was made of the fact that one of our regulars and the most recent past-president, J. A. Bettes, was not able to be present at these meetings due to an extended sojourn in the hospital during which period two encounters with surgery was experienced; The best wishes for a rapid recovery were expressed by President Griffis, on behalf of those assembled, to be carried back to Mr. Bettes by his ` representative at these meetings, Mr. J, A. Brown, Jr. It was also announced that Mr. A, F. Heinsohn, Vice ^resident, General Asbestos & Rubber Division of Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc,, North Charleston, S. C,, had suffered a severe heart attack within recent weeks but was now well on his way to recovery. Best wishes for a speedy recovery were expressed by President Griffis. -2 to I I I ) IO 2# The Minutes of the last meeting v;ere presented for reading, however, since all members had received copies of these transactions and were familiar with the actions there taken, it was moved by Mr. Hough, seconded by Mr, McCluskey and unanimously agreed that l^fte minutes be approved as circulated# 3# The Treasurer^ Report was presented by Treasurer W. S. Hough who reported that the Board of Governors in session on June 10th had reviewed the report and recommended its approval. Following a discussion of the report, it was moved by Mr. Brown, seconded by Mr. Byrnes and unanimously agreed that the report be approved, " ii. The next report offered for consideration was a review of a report issued by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory covering irradiation studies conducted by that agency for the Institute through the efforts of the late Dr, M, S, Maier. The report as received from Oak Ridge was turned over to Dr, Fred L, Pundsack, Johns-Manville Corp., for study and interpretation in order that the information set forth might be more readily understood by the non technical members of the Institute. The review as v/ritten by Dr, Pundsack was abstracted at this meeting by the Secretary and the complete report as issued is attached as a part of the minutes of this meeting# There are still some parts of this report that require clarification and the Secretary will make further inquiry in this regard to the Oak Ridge Laboratory, s* i 6# The next portion of the meeting was devoted to Committee reports. The chairman of each of the committees reported for their respective committee and a copy of each report is attached as a part of the minutes of this meeting. Hutchcroft 7# The Fellowship Report was presented by Dr, Shaw and included discussion related to the following subjects, a) Federal Specification Revision Progress. Specifications MIL-C-10316A MIL-C-U117A MIL-I-3053A SS-C-li66a -3- b) Investigation of Methods for Determining Asbestos Textile Thicknesses* ASTM Method versus CCC-T-191b method c) Abstracts of literature related to glass textiles Copies of these reports are attached as a part of the minutes of this meeting* Upon conclusion of the committee and fellowship reports, President Griffis expressed the desire to have the chairmen of the several committees prepare for the next meeting, the annual meating, summary reports covering the activities for the past year. Such reports would serve the purpose of providing an annual report for those executives and officials that normally attend only this one meeting yearly, 8* The final reports to be presented were offered by Mr, Carl Bindman and Mr, G. F. Jenkins, Both of these men have traveled extensively in all parts of the world and their remarks presented on this occasion concerned their observations with respect to the asbestos industry in various parts of the world. It was observed that the asbestos industry appears to be improving over most of the world, however, the fiber supply is well ahead of demand,' The effect of the Russian supply of fiber in the world market was reviewed, however, the impact of this source on the free world market is apparently not too well established. Also, the effect of low priced labor as reflected in Japanese and Chinese imports was discussed and the seriousness of this challenge must not be underestimated. Both Mr. Bindman and Mr. Jenkins answered questions related to their presentations and the entire discussion proved to be highly enlightening* 9* Before adjourning the meeting, President Griffis made the following two announcements. 1. All committee chairman are urged to submit their meeting reports to the Secretary within 3 to E> days after the meeting. The Secretary in turn will then be able to mail the minutes to all members within ten days of the meeting, 2. The next scheduled meeting of the Institute is the annual meeting and will be held in New York City on September 10 and 11, 19$9* The meet ing hotel has not as yet been selected but further word in this regard should be forth coming within the next two weeks, 10* There being no further business to be conducted at this meeting it was moved by Mr. Hough, seconded by Mr. Brown and unanimously agreed that the ` meeting be adjourned, Myril C.
