Nebraska The writer attended the above noted meeting in Omaha on October 2, 1975 and was the speaker at a one-hour session on QSHA. About 75 people were present. The current, suddenly changed situation re the OSHA regulations was described with the information that the construction industry would be covered by a separate but probably similar regulation. The status of the crystalline silica regulation was also presented as being proposed in the next few months and as likely to cause them the same kind of problems as the asbestos regulations. The data we have on asbestos and silica exposures was described and emphasis was placed on helping them to help themselves in a reasonable dust control in the workplace. The difference between our and Selikoff's results was noted but not emphasized. The presentation was received with a great deal of interest and was followed by about 30 minutes of questions. Only one contractor said he had been monitored for asbestos dust during sanding and he had not been cited. U.S. Gypsum, National Gypsum, Flintkote, Beadex, and the Gypsum Association were represented. I think they were a little surprised to see UCC as the feature speaker at the OSHA discussion but they appearedto have no real disagreement with our story. They got up and mentioned the efforts that had been and were being made to remove asbestos from their muds but there was general agreement from the floor that the presently available asbestos-free muds were not equivalent to those with asbestos. The following potentially useful new contacts were also made: 1. John Craig, GDCI Director from Hawaii, who has promised to keep us informed if any antiasbestos legislation is introduced in Hawaii. He was well aware of the efforts last year and, apparently, was involved in getting the bill buried in committee. 2. Mr. W. V. (Bill) Campbell, President Beadex Manufacturing Company 833 Houser Way N. Renton, WA 98055 Mr. Campbell has a chemist who is an antiasbestos crusader. He requested information to counter this. Told him we would send some and a copy of the GDCI article as soon as possible. It is TPN suggested that T. P. Norris stop in and see him the next time he is in the area. The writer has accepted an offer from Mr. Dave Green, GDCI Director in Minnesota, to present the same talk at their three-day regional meeting in Minneapolis in about two weeks. /JH. B.
