Wheeler, 189 ^ File: Unknown from Vinyl Chlorid Unit -' 35590-9C1-D037------ ----- Dear Mr. Bennett: The unknown light-gray, solid material removed from th bottoaiiof the vinyl chloride converter was found to consist of 81 per cent mercuric chloride and 11.3 per cent mercurous chlorid . The black particles interspersed throughout the gray solid was tenta tively identified as carbon. In addition to the major components, the unknown material contained a minor amount of iron and trace amounts of aluminum, nickel, copper, manganese, magnesium and silicon. The difference in the solubility characteristics of mercuric and mercurous chloride in ethanol and ethyl ether permitted a simple way to separate the two salts. Vet chemical qpalltatlve and quantitative procedures were then used for identification of th salts. The Emission Spectrograph was used to identify the trac metals.
