Patton Boggs Vista Chemical Formosa Plastics Dow Chemical Univ. of Louisville Kim Reed Has Shah CMA CMA 1.0 The Committee approved the October 6-7,1994 Records of Meeting as written. 2.0 Kenneth Mundt of Applied Epidemiology Inc. introduced the Committee to AEI and discussed the information needed by AEI for completion of the epidemiology update for vinyl chloride workers. This information includes: data from the previous contractor; work history records; and, death certificates. The study update requires resolution on several issues including: plant ownership changes; and, unknown status of living members of the cohort. Dr. Mundt would like to receive from the company members any information on the deaths or separations of members of the original cohort from companies over the last five years. Dr. Mundt will prepare a form to collect information from member companies. Dr. Mundt would like to receive the information from the former contractor by mid 1995. Company information would be needed by September 1995. The Committee approved $20,000 for transfer of data from ENSR, the former contractor, to AEI. CMA 02256 VCHC ROM January 30,1995 Page 2 Has Shah and Jonathan Ramlow will visit ENSR, the former contractor, by the end of February to ensure the transition of data presently stored at ENSR. Following receipt of all information. Dr. Mundt will develop a detailed protocol for the epidemiology update. Tata Vygen Company members will contact Dr. Shah with a designated person within their companies to whom Dr. Mundt can address specific questions about plant ownership and personnel status. 3.0 Carlo Tamburo reviewed his proposal for a brain cancer case control study of vinyl chloride workers. Dr. Tamburo presently is working with GEON to catalogue all vinyl chloride worker exposure health incidents in the Louisville, KY area. Challenges to the development of the study include: accounting for the entire, original BFGoodrich cohort; identifying every brain cancer death; verifying the cause of death through histopathological examination of autopsy tissue samples; and, tracking cohort members outside the Louisville area. The Committee agreed to schedule a conference call on February 6 to discuss the proposal further. Dr. Shah will contact Dr. Tamburo with the Committee's decision in the next few weeks. 4.0 Caffey Norman reviewed the status of the responses to Committee letters from ATSDR and EPA. ATSDR, in a January 23,1995 letter, expressed interest in working with the Committee on a voluntary research program to address ATSDR's data needs for vinyl chloride. ATSDR has requested that the Committee develop a study protocol and submit the protocol to ATSDR for review. Following this review, ATSDR staff will meet with Committee members to discuss the protocol. The Committee agreed to proceed with the development of the two-generation reproductive study protocol. Dr. Ramlow will modify a Dow protocol to reflect the requirements for the vinyl chloride study. The draft protocol will be distributed to the Committee for review. Dr. Ramlow also will begin identifying CMA 022566 VCHC ROM January 30,1995 Page 3 potential laboratories for the study. Once the meeting with ATSDR has been scheduled, the Committee will contact EPA to discuss the neurotoxicity study requirement of vinyl chloride. Funding for the two-generation reproductive study will be needed from company members by the fourth quarter of 1995. 5.0 Dr. Shah reported that the California EPA is conducting a health risk assessment on vinyl chloride in response to the measurement of high levels of vinyl chloride at a landfill site in a residential area. Cal-EPA would be interested in working with the Committee on this risk assessment. A public workshop on the issue will take place in the spring. Dr. Ramlow will call Lillian Kelly at Cal-EPA to answer any questions that she may have concerning vinyl chloride. 6.0 To date, James Cogliano of EPA has not reviewed Dr. Reitz's manuscript on the pharmacokinetic model for vinyl chloride risk assessment and the Committee's request to modify the Heast Table. Dr. Cogliano will contact Dr. Shah with details on the process for requesting a modification of the Heast Table. The Committee agreed that a suggestion should be made to Dr. Reitz to include a table in the manuscript that enumerates the risk of vinyl chloride in various units. 7.0 Discussions of James Swenberg's research proposal and a possible international workshop were postponed until the next meeting. 8.0 Dr. Shah distributed the Committee financial statement. 9.0 The next Committee conference call was scheduled for February 6,1995 at 2:00 p.m. 10.0 The meeting adjourned at approximately 3:00 p.m. Subject to Approval Hasmukh C.
